Salvation Army Soup Kitchen
Every month the Ketchikan Area Chief Petty Officer Mess works with the Salvation Army to provide meals for those in need of a meal. In the small fishing town, nestled in the majestic fjords of the Tongass National Forest lies this amazing community called Ketchikan. Located in the southeast region of Alaska, this unique village offers many opportunities to thrive and prosper; but like every other town in America, there are those who struggle to get by. Times are hard for these individuals and families that live day to day with little to no food or sometimes shelter. The environment throughout Southeast Alaska is harsh, unforgiving temperate rainforest, and a warm meal and shelter from the elements goes a long way to providing those who need help. Once a month, our organization, Ketchikan CPOA helps the local Salvation Army Soup Kitchen prepare meals, serve and clean up, I have dedicated three years of monthly service to helping plan, prep, and cook and serve the citizens of Ketchikan, AK who need it. This service has had a profound effect on my life. The most memorable time I can recall was my first time attending the soup kitchen. I enjoyed meeting the staff at the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, working with my fellow Coast Guard men and women to prep the meal, and to meet the patrons who attended breakfast that day.

My children and I volunteered to help set up the facility for this year’s Thanksgiving dinner. The day before Thanksgiving we drove to downtown Atlanta to the Georgia World Congress and Convention Center. We were amazed by the number of volunteers already there. There were people from all walks of life, executives, athletes, clergy, housewives and fathers, and even some people who were clearly in need themselves.…

I knew that they collect and spread resources throughout the community. What I did not know was that they provide opportunity for people to complete community service as part of a sentencing. They do not just give them work to do but counsel and advocate for them as well. One of the people that I worked with when I volunteered was convicted for drug abuse. He had to do community service to meet his sentencing requirements. He also had to do drug counseling. The Major at the Salvation Army works with these people to help them get off drugs and become a productive member of society. I also worked with a few young men who were completing high school through an alternative school program. Then there was Major Carol and I working that day. It was nice to see such a diverse group of people working together to benefit the less fortunate in our community. It was our job to sort and organize food for the Christmas Baskets and the food pantry. They have close to 300 families on their list this year from Marinette and Menominee who will be receiving baskets this year. It is amazing that by volunteering 3 hours one Saturday morning; I will have affected the lives of that many people on Christmas this year. The volunteer assignment experience relates to the theme of our course by showing us that there are less fortunate people in our community and it is the responsibility of everyone in the community to…

Bringing people together encouraging human unity is a gift. Participating in service demonstrates that a person cares for others. There is no measurement for service to society, it is what helps to make the world a better place. I provide service regularly at my church, City Of Faith Church Of God. The congregation inspires me to give as much of me to them, as I possibly can. Working at. The church food pantry brings me joy.feeding citizens who are without the basics, food, and seeing the look of relief on their faces is one of the greatest experiences. Additionally, preparing for the culmination of "Child's Month Celebration" has been a lot of fun. Designing the logo based on the theme of "Be A Winner and Join The Race" was a fulfilling role. As a nominee of the National Honors Society , my mind overflows with ideas of how we can serve in our community. Some tasks we can fulfill include visiting the elderly. I am certain that they would appreciate and enjoy us going to read and/or listen them. Helping to clean our school environment would also be a good use of our service. In addition, I believe that academic tutoring from members of the Honors Society to students at NFA, other schools in the district, and the public library would be very useful and effective. Our service is important and would be very effective in our…

With this group, I had the opportunity to go to the local Willa Gill Center and package CARE packages for the community. The CARE packages contained basic needs such as toothpaste and shampoo, and special items like nail polish and makeup. After we packaged everything, we were able to sort out clothing and cans that were going to be distributed the next day. Working behind the scenes and helping the workers prepare was very rewarding.…

As apart of my service, I assisted in helping the community as well as others through the Notre Dame Annual Pilgrimage, Harvest Kitchen at St. Kevin’s Roman Catholic Church and participating in the Notre Dame Walk Against Male Violence. In October of 2010, I walked and raised money for the annual Pilgrimage at our school which involved trudging the distance from our school to the Allenburg Bridge. The money raised assisted those in third world countries mainly going to a facility called Yancana Huasy intended for the use by mentally and physically challenge young adults. The money is also sent to Haiti, Peru and the Dominican. As a volunteer for Harvest Kitchen my responsibility was to help deliver the meals to the people as well as work the handicap elevator in order to assist immobile people. Other duties included clearing dishes, socializing with others, setting up and serving food and drinks. Lastly, I also participated in the Walk Against Male Violence in which I was required to raise money and walk the 5 Kilometers as a method of raising awareness and money for abused women.…

Here are some examples of my service to my community. During my 8th grade year in Elena Christian Jr. High School, both my classmates and I, we decided to do a beach cleanup. We chose the beach across from Water Gut. It was a wonderful experience because I was able to help out my community in a positive way. In my Senior Year of being in the National Honor Society, I was excited to volunteer and to help those in need. I helped out with a soup kitchen in Brainerd through another organization that I am in, the Student Council. As I scooped soup into bowls and placed them onto people’s trays, I could see a look of appreciation and gratitude on their faces. This was the first time in my National Honor Society career where I understood just how much my time and effort meant to these individuals. This volunteer opportunity made me realize that a simple meal, smile, and effort to do something helpful and nice can really make someone’s day brighter or easier.…

The service that I did with the poor was at St. Vincent De Paul. I took the bus with a friend after school on a random Thursday with Ms. Reuter driving the bus, which I didn’t expect her to know how to do at all. It was my first time working there, because I had only worked at the distribution center the year before for confirmation. When we arrived we all signed in and they put the people who had been there before in their normal locations. My friend and I got split up, with me in charge of sorting all of the donated canned foods and my friend went over to move pallets around. While I was working with one of the staff there, I made friends with some freshmen that were also working with me. They started calling me silly names like “broth boy” because at some point I got in charge of sorting canned broths.…

Having the opportunity to make new, diverse friends around the community impacted me as a person. The people I met not only included the people I served, but also included the people I worked alongside of me in the food pantry. Since I volunteered at the same day and time every week, I was able to become familiar with many new people. In fact, many of these people were even able to connect to my life. One day I had a conversation with a man I volunteered with numerous times whose name was Steve.…

For example, over 100,000 Delawareans go hungry everyday. As members of the community, it is our job to provide these people with the support they need. We are all very fortunate people who may have taken things for granted, one time or another. Most of us do not know what it is like to go without food for a day because it is not affordable. Whether it be helping with school decorations, planting trees in the garden, or cleaning up garbage, doing service allows me to both aid my community and to know exactly how I am aiding it. It is for this reason that I enjoy community service. Often, I will sign up to help with small, individual community events. For example, a few weeks ago, I allocated six hours to help set up and operate various activities at the River Hill Community Health Fair. I am also a member of the American Red Cross, and frequently help blood donors at the Columbia Red Cross Blood Donor Center. Whether it be helping the community learn more about health, or helping facilitate blood donations to the needy, I know exactly how I help in community…
