Salt Lake City Riots Case Study
I'VE BEEN IN riots and this was not a riot," Salt Lake City Police Chief Rick Dinse said at a news conference at midmorning Sunday. "… I believe it was the right amount of force at the right time." Dinse said windows in several buildings and at least one vehicle were damaged during the clash, which began when individuals in a boisterous crowd in the thousands became unruly after the Bud World beer garden attraction was closed after reaching capacity. Dinse estimated damage could reach "the low thousands," but both he and Mayor Rocky Anderson objected to early reports that characterized the incident as a riot.

"… Frankly, I anticipated far worse than this and far earlier (in the Games)." Dinse said between 180 and 200 helmeted and riot-gear clad officers responded to the area near Main and 200 South Streets after receiving reports that the crowd was getting out of hand. The gathering was declared an "unlawful assembly" about midnight and officers began slowly pushing the crowd, many of whom were chanting "USA, USA!", down Main Street to the south, Dinse said. Rob Garcia, 18, of Salt Lake City told the Associated Press the crowd was yelling at police, and officers forced people against cars. "The police were pushing people," he said. "The cops just jumped across and set up a barricade." Two revelers fight in the street during a riot. Several shop windows were broken, but no injuries were reported. While many in the crowd obeyed orders to disburse, some individuals began hurling glass beer bottles at the officers, who responded by firing about 40 rounds of "impact devices" at the lower extremities of members of the crowd, he said. The action quickly scattered the

People were throwing rocks, smashing windows and stores. Parents held their kids, and police got in riot gear and started shooting tear gas and rubber bullets. You would think that this would be from something different. But it was from a sports game. Fans of sports teams are getting so upset over who won or lost. I think that fans go too far because a lot of people have gotten hurt and killed by acting like this. On the other side of the issue, I also think that being a serious fan can make people happy.…

Many things happened in the 1990s, for example the beginning of new economy, the start of the Internet age, and several more important events. But one of the things that most stood out those years was the misconduct of the police also known as police brutality. Police brutality is the use of excessive or sometimes even unnecessary force by police when it comes to dealing with civilians. Attorney Janer Reno even said in a conference he had in the year 1995, that there was a big problem with excessive force coming from the police, but it still much had to be done about that problem. We have the case of Rodney King in 1992 as an example of police brutality. “The beating of Rodney King by Los Angeles police officers resulted in outrage and raised tensions between the police and the community” (4). Rodney was stopped like anyone else for a traffic violation. The police used excessive force on him by striking him over 50 times using nightsticks, after he resisted police…

Tens of thousands of people were in Seattle to protest peacefully, and the protests did start peacefully, but they did not end that way. A small number of anarchist groups were in Seattle to cause civil disobedience and acts of vandalism and property damage. These groups conducted deliberate acts of vandalism on corporate offices in Seattle. The Seattle Police Department did not have the number of officers, even with help from other departments, to handle the number of protestors. The officers used pepper spray, tear gas, stun grenades and eventually rubber bullets to try to unblock congested city streets. Some of the anarchists fought back by breaking windows and vandalizing storefronts. Dumpsters were pushed out into intersections and they were lit on fire and tires on police cars were deflated. The National Guard was finally called in, but did not get to Seattle until the next morning. Once the WTO packed up and went home, the protestors packed up and went on their way.…
