Salesians of Don Bosco The Salesians of Don Bosco, also known as the Salesian Society, originally known as the Society of St. Francis de Sales, is a Roman Catholic religious order founded by Saint John Bosco in the 19th century. It was founded to help and care for young and poor children that were affected by the Industrial Revolution. The Salesians history begins in 1845 when John Bosco opened a night school for boys in Valdocco, which is currently part of Turin. Over the next few years, Bosco opened several other night schools and made a set of rules in 1857. John Bosco passed away in 1888, but that did not stop the spread of the Salesians. In 1911 the Salesians were established in Columbia, China, India, South Africa, Tunisia, Venezuela, and the United States. It is still around today with over 20,000 members in 2,711 houses. In 2000 it was the third largest missionary in the world. The Salesians logo is made of two images mixed together. In the background there is an “S” (Salesians) in white is formed within a sphere like a globe marked to the right and left by two cuttings between the hills/dunes The second image is in the centre of the globe bridging the “S” road. This is an arrow pointing upwards resting on three perpendicular legs on top of which are three closed circles making a image of three people: the first of these in the middle and taller than the others is the point of the arrow, and the other two beside are shorter. The three figures with the arrow pointing upwards can also be viewed as a house with a sloping roof (the arms) and with pillars holding it up (the bodies of the three people).
