Though the safety of a person is primarily individual in nature, responsibility to maintain it lies not only to the environment he belongs to but also to his behavioural practice . Most of the accident occurs either due to hostile environment or due to unsafe action. By systematic approach, the environment can be made conducive. But the circle of safety will not be complete unless the behaviour of the participants are controlled or moulded. So, the behaviour of an individual and that of the team plays a very important role in safety. The effectiveness of an organisation’s safety management system is determined by the collective behaviour and attitudes of its employee to the common goal of safety. In an organisation the values, perceptions, competencies of individual and that of members of the team determine the extent of commitment towards the safety management system. Safety management system of any organisation is effective partially in eliminating hazard in workplace but has limited control over unsafe behaviour of the employee and for this reason, mishaps cannot be avoided.. Through improved technology, safer working environment may be ensured but an employee’s attitude towards the safety management system is the determining factor. Overconfidence, complacency, lack of knowledge etc., can play havoc to any good quality safety management system. It is not only the workplace safety, but also is the human behaviour responsible for occupational health to a great extent. Organisational safety

management system may provide Personal Protective Equipments, organise safety programs etc. to enhance safety awareness but positive safety culture has to be inculcated among the employees by influencing the behaviour in the workplace. This

People have to be trained to use all machinery which is needed at work so that it is used correctly and does not pose a risk to yourself and others.
