Safe Ride Program Analysis
Maryville continues it’s streak as one of the safest college towns for third year in a row. For the last three years, Maryville has been the only college town in Missouri to make the list of the safest college towns in America. This year, Maryville ranks number 22 in the nation, rising them up from 28 last year. Northwest has partnered up with the city, as well as the public safety department to create programs to keep the town and campus safer.
City manager Greg Mcdanel has been a key part of the partnering between the city and the school. “Overall communication and information exchanging is the biggest thing,” Mcdanel said. “Other items include jointly designing safer areas in town such as 4th Street which had CPTED principles used

Developed in 2016, the program was designed to reduce violence, including stalking, sexual assault, and partner violence. It states on the website:
“A green dot is any behavior‚ choice‚ word‚ or attitude that sends the message that violence is not okay with you. By doing green dots, you help set the norm that violence is unacceptable and everyone is expected to do their part to keep our community safe.”
Senior Devin Williams has been around long enough to experience the safety changes on campus.
“Being half blind I feel great about it (Northwest being the safest college town),” Williams said. “Also law enforcement and school officials seem to partner up the two equally to keep campus and city folks safe. They treat it as an all inclusive thing instead of segregating city and campus.”
In the past few years, greek life has undergone revisioning to help fight against the stereotypical hazing that are associated with Greek Life.
“Greek Life helps with safety as well,” Williams said. “They enforce anti-hazing policies and in every chapter there’s a risk management chair that keeps respective chapters from doing any criminal activity.”
Mcdanel accredits the safety of the town to the efforts of everyone joining

It still does not determine how each student feels about CC a firearm on campus. Though both Aaron, and Taylor attend small universities and feel safe on their campuses. They still feel students who have a concealed carry weapons license (CCW) should be allowed to carry their firearm on campus. This was the next question I wanted to answer. Taylor Beavers who was a 2015 graduate of Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania with a degree in Physical Training (PT), also agrees with being authorized to CC a weapon on campus if one possesses the licenses to do so. SPC Beavers is also an Army veteran, and she feels that being in the Army has an encouragement in why she would support the idea of allowing conceal carry on campus. Slippery Rock University is also known as SRU, has about 10,000 students enrolled in their institution. Compared to Taylor and Aaron’s college it is rather big. So one can see that size really does not matter in this case. There was one response out of all my interviews that raised a red flag. Hannah Burras a Nursing major at The University of Toledo was not on board for carrying a firearm on campus. “I do not feel that students should be allowed to carry a firearm on campus... I would never even think of taking a gun into an area that was set up for educational purposes.” Hannah shocked me with this response because she also has her CCW license, yet…

In the articles "Mob Rule on College Campuses" by Cinnamon Stillwell and "Speech Codes: Alive and Well at Colleges" by Harvey A. Silverglate and Greg Lukianoff describe college issues involving the freedom of speech. Both of these articles talk about how freedom of speech can cause many problems in college. Even though these articles are on the same topic, they are on very different forms of freedom of speech. In "Mob Rule on College Campus and in "Speech Codes: Alive and Well at Colleges" both talk about how there is harassment all throughout colleges. But the two pieces of literature talk about two different ways of harassment. Both of the…

The concern for the safety of your child in a college campus or university will most likely be your number one priority. In the case that you do not have a child and you are that person in the university, you might always want to watch your back. According to a “statistical analysis of more than three decades of data, in 2011 the United States entered a new period in which mass shootings are occurring more frequently.” (Cohen) Now off course, the research that has been done by Cohen includes mass shootings from ages varying from six to twenty-one years old although another article by the “EverytownResearch.org” website reveals how out of all of the school mass shootings in the United States, the majority of the mass shooting incidents that have happened in different colleges or universities. Because younger Ed campuses like elementary, middle and high schools are particularly small in comparison to the majority of all college campuses and universities, it is easier for security guards including school police to be in most places or get to a dangerous situation faster than in a higher Ed campus. A university…

Belcher Manufacturing Company is guilty of safety violations that resulted in the death of William Carlson because Belcher seemed well aware that “most of the inspectors, including Carlson, had developed various “shortcuts” to reduce the time required to test each compressor” and that some inspectors continue to use the shortcuts even after the accident (Nkomo, Fottler, McAfee, pg. 254). The company should have taken disciplinary actions towards those who were using the shortcuts. Also, where were the supervisors? If taking shortcuts can cause the compressors to explode, should there not be a final inspection of the initial inspection or a secondary procedure to protect the employees and the company?…

Houghton Refrigeration Company safety training program is very poorly organized. I disagree with their current process of hiring and training new employees. Houghton Refrigeration should not expect newly hired employees to learn a job within ten minutes and perform the job correctly without any prior knowledge of the product they are about to work on. Currently Houghton does not offer orientations. Houghton should offer newly hired employees an orientation where they are given a brief history of the company and the products it offers customers. Houghton should also offer training sessions during the first week of employment so employees can learn the company’s processes. Training sessions should be conducted by a member of management who is engaging and familiar with the…
