Safe, Legal, and Ethical Use of Digital Information and
Technology: Appropriate Use Essay
There are many issues that lie beneath the use of digital info and technology. Writing a paper for a college class is always hard, some never know what to write, which websites to use, what information to write down when citing sources, there is just a mess of do’s and do not’s with today’s vast growing technologies. This is true for many college students both old and new. As some students may struggle with the actual writing there is a large number who struggle with the legalities within the paper itself. The goal of this research paper is to teach you about the safe, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies so that writing papers, doing research, and getting online might be just a little easier.
Safe Use
Every parent wants their child safe, no matter if it is when they are walking down the street to a friend’s house, walking into college for the first time, or even something as simple as getting online to do research. That is something that not every kid thinks about, being safe while using digital technology. Strauss says, “Like going out into the real world, we guide our kids about issues of safety, manners, and overall conduct. We should do the same before they get online, and perhaps even before they get into a classroom.” The importance of teaching children and students how to use digital technology safely is very high. All children should know how to use digital technology safely so that if something were to come up they would be well aware of how to handle the situation or what to do. The Children’s Internet Protection Agency (CIPA) tries to protect children when parents can’t always, online.

The article,”Let Kids Run Wild Online,” the author, Danah Boyd discusses the issue with overprotective parents who constantly restrict their child’s freedom, especially now with technology being the new field for kids in today’s century. Parent’s are quite often viewed as overprotective and desperate to be involved in their child's lives, however, this isn’t necessarily bad. Contrary to Boyd’s argument, children should not be allowed to “run wild online,” for their are many consequences and negative outcomes to this matter. Firstly, children, who are main focus of this Body’s prompt, aren’t at the appropriate age to understand the the dangers of online activities, or many don’t take it serious or into consideration. Secondly, parents aren’t…

Because of America’s fast moving industry, our new generations are being exposed to the more modern ways of technology. Although this is extremely beneficial for education, it is not as beneficial for the safety of our children. Giving an uneducated and naive child access to the internet is like opening Pandora’s Box to an alluring world of evil. Their curiosity can lead to unexpected troubles and unexpected people that will forever corrupt their innocent little minds. Like Pandora we cannot just tell them to keep the box close, we must teach them what to do once the box is open, because it will open.…

In today’s world Technology is everywhere. We use computers for almost everything in everyday life, including “babysitting” our children. Computers can have both positive and negative effects on children, while some of the negative effects on health and development are unseen. As adults, we understand the physical world around us and the concepts inside computer programs. Children, on the other hand, need to learn this with traditional play and outdoor activities. Adults, over about 30, know the world without computers. Our younger generations are starting to use computers at very a young age. They are maturing in a world of instant answers and satisfaction.…

In these days (2013) technology has become the modern way of life. Technology has its pros and cons concerning children. If used properly children can gain a impact on physical development, impact on cognitive development, and impact on social development. Technology today is a part of children natural environment. In my days all we had were video games. Technology/Internet were in the process of becoming a part of life. In those days we had to learn the ins and outs of technology. Today, children are being taught threw the internet. Modern T.V., video games, etc. has all begin programming learning activities for children. The internet allows children to actively participate in a self-learning environment. Weather the child is home or in school. Not only are children learning threw technology but they can also socialize, play games, and interact/explore places and cultures of the world without leaving the home/school. Since technology has become a source of teaching children has become more participative in learning. Children are prone to technology because it it apart of everyday life. We are aware are facts about technology being negative to a child. Based from my view, my research, and my opinion; I am aware of the bad things toward technology (mainly the internet and video games), but I am also aware of the proper training of using technology children has more access to the word then any generation before the 90’s. We as adults had no proper training because technology was at its peak of becoming used anywhere. That’s why based off all the research and all the things we have learned along the way of the whole technology era, should be able to teach children the risks as well as be trusted to not put themselves at risk. Parents have the option to block sites. There are now tablets for kids to interact socially with family and close friends, no strangers because it’s set up by the parent. I just…

Even the telegraph, one of the first mediums of communication led America into an era of mass communication, but in doing so it has gravely hurt society today. In a social commentary developed by Neil Postman, he explains that the invention of the telegraph led to America sharing useless information back and forth which had no relevance in their daily lives. With an abundance of knowledge, it began to pollute people’s mind and important news was lost in the sea of “news” (30-43). Similar to Postman, experts have warned the public about the health risks that come along with the use of technology and the illegal activities that happen on the internet. However, unlike the telegraph, technology is able to block inappropriate content from being seen, and databases are meant to sweep out the useless information floating around, to provide students with reliable and accurate information. Today it is common knowledge that too much screen time, the amount of time a child watches a computer, television, or phone screen, is harmful to them and impacts their brain. However, The American Academy of Pediatrics, which once recommended parents limit children’s screen time, has changed those recommendations to encourage screen time. They now distinguish between different kinds of screen use, passive and active. Passive screen use would simply be watching videos or playing games, where active screen use includes creative pursuits and learning. The hope is to achieve “Extraordinary learning”, where a child’s learning becomes a passion and they want, they desire to learn more (Mims). By involving technology into this process, the sky is the limit for what a student can learn and dream…

The Internet has now become integrated in human society and the range of Internet applications have broadened and the users have become more sophisticated. With the broaden appeal of the internet greater risk has followed. These risks have led to the introduction of cyber-crime and the copyright infringement issues that plaque many businesses. Many argued that the absence of global legislation was turning the cyberspace into a place where there would be increasing worries and dangers. The legal system of today has had challenges in keeping pace with the growth of the Internet and its impact it’s had on business on the Internet. The expectation of most was that there was a need for the cyber-laws to govern the new virtual world. The aim of the cyber laws is to work in concert with the existing laws and to lessen the legal issues in the future. One notable legal issue is the ownership of information or the legal protection of the data. The illicit use of copyright material is common place on the internet as well as the spread of false and malicious information.…
