STEM Personal Statement
I have always had a passion for the STEM field. Ever since I was a child I have been exposed to biomedical engineering from a young age, have always loved my science and classes, and have had experiences that have introduced me to different fields of STEM. So far I have taken ten STEM classes in Highschool. and my favorite was Biology. I remember loving every second of every lab we did and excelled in them. I have taken 4 lab based courses Pre-AP Biology, Pre-AP chemistry, AP physics and AP Chemistry. Out of all the labs in all the classes, my favorite was the pig section lab. This experience was a very poignant moment for me and I could see myself doing something of that nature as a career. From that moment on I knew that STEM was the right …show more content…
I learned this at events similar to the Paralympics sponsored my father's company. These events showed me what prosthetics can do firsthand and I realized how important they are and how they change millions of lives. During the summer, I attended an academic leadership STEM summer program at Brown University. There I learned about future technologies and we discussed controversial science topics in a debate setting. We delved into the science of clones, AI, space travel, drones, stem cells, GMOs and the branches of engineering. My favorite subjects were cloning and biomedical engineering. During this program, we had to to create a project plan to help our community through STEM. I choose to help save the honey bees. While researching, I discovered that honey bees were dying at an alarming rate and they are vital for our ecosystem. I then found my service project idea. I decided to start a small online company to raise awareness and money for honey bee research. I am doing this because I understand the gravity of the situation we are in and that I need to make a difference in the world. I aspire to go to college for an engineering degree and then go to medical school for pediatric

In school, I have enjoyed learning sciences especially when the topics are related to human conditions. Ever since learning about general biology in my junior high school years ago, I have on my own taken additional anthropology, psychology, anatomy and chemistry classes from a local college for further enrichment and have grown very fond of learning the complexity in human machinery and interaction. Occasionally I do find learning these topics too weighty to continue. Whenever that happens now, I would always manage to pull through by remembering that particular good day where I acted as 'an orthopedic doctor'.…

I can still vividly recall the eleven-year-old me fawning over the likes of Lawrence Krauss and Neil Degrasse Tyson. I was completely immersed in everything and anything pertaining to the vast universe beyond our seemingly insignificant world. I thought I had it all figured out. I would devote my life to being an astrophysicist and eventually earn my PhD. I would relish in the pink lettering on my wall that said “Dr. Mia”, but as I approach my late teens, my mind has been bombarded with what-ifs and buts. Irrespective of my change of heart, I still have an intense passion for math and science since it is how we explain the world around us, and that is why I have settled on biomedical engineering.…

North Star STEM has helped me tremendously; both academically and professionally. The funding granted to me through the AugSTEM program has not only allowed me to attend college to obtain my B.S. Chemistry, but also to gain valuable research experience. Additional funding allows me to study and research to my fullest ability without having to work more hours at a non-STEM related part-time job. Travel funding, community volunteering opportunities, and academic presenting/networking are some of my most important assets acquired with North Star STEM.…

I have learned so many things this semester that I never thought I would learn. I learned how to measure vital signs, how to identify what kind of food poisoning someone has, what the percentage is for a child of someone with Huntington’s disease, and so much more. I don’t think that I will end up in a biomedical science career, but who knows what the future will bring?…

My interest in the health field dates back to when I was twelve years old. My grandmother had suffered a massive stroke and the left side of her body was paralyzed. From that very moment in our lives, I became very involved with the paperwork and the health of my grandmother. I have witnessed the effect on her as well as my family of her stroke, craniotomy, heart attacks, seizures, chest pains, amputation of her leg, therapy, to so much more. Yes, this was a huge impact on my life as a young individual, but it allowed me to mature. With the great guidance from my school and family members it was a part of my life that I was able to get through. Learning what she went through, translating the comments from doctors to my parents, and vice versa, and informing my grandmother and my parents what the use of each…

When I was four years old I was asked, "Katie, what do you want to do when you grow up?” To my family's surprise my response was "Work on hearts or brains". This aspiration has never wavered, and has only become more a part of who I am today through first hand experiences and opportunities I have had in the medical field. I have been fortunate enough to see surgeries first hand, work next to medical professionals, and get an idea of what different occupations bring to the table in the field of medicine.…

For me, stem cell research is a more recently discovered passion. After reading a short bit about it in my high school biology textbook, I was very intrigued. Stem cell research has so much potential, from growing whole organs using new 3D printing technology to therapies for many diseases. I even wrote a paper supporting increased government funding for stem cell research and sent it to my local representative. Last semester, for my final paper in my neurology seminar. I was curious about the possibility of using stem cell therapy to treat stroke patients. Several studies have been done on animals, and a study currently underway in the United Kingdom is the first study to use neural stem cells for stroke therapy in humans. It was such an inspiring…

Everything in my life began to change, from my friends to my attitude. My future was looking bright. The only thing left was to pick a profession, something that would ignite my spark. That was when my parents were involved in a terrible accident. In March 2009, my parents were pedestrians struck by a car. My mother was diagnosed with a fractured tibial plateau, and was wheelchair bound for five months. During this difficult time I accompanied her to numerous appointments and met many different medical personnel. Surprisingly, I became inspired. It was an awful time for my family, but it was an experience that changed my life. Everything about the healthcare system fascinated me. I asked many questions about medications, imaging techniques that were used on my mother, and job descriptions of practically everyone I had encountered. I remember telling a nurse about how I found the hospital to be the most interesting place that I have ever visited and she replied, “Well if you feel that way, you should become a doctor, they practically live…

My father always told me that nothing worth having comes easy. I carry these words close to my heart and they have driven me to challenge myself through life, especially in my STEM career. My major in the science field has been similar to riding a roller-coaster, but I have learned to overcome most of the obstacles I have faced along the way. No matter what situation brought me down, I remained positive and tried to think of solutions rather than giving up. Finally, in the last few months, many of my peers would mention that I am the type of person who is able to withstand obstacles and recover quickly.…

I decided to study life sciences not only because my major requires it, but because I have a strong interest in learning about how the human body works and interacts in the universe. Being a pre-pharmacy major I am specifically interested in how the body reacts with taking certain medication, along with the side effects of taking the medication. Will a certain part of the body shut down with this medication, will the nerves not be triggered if a medication is taken, or what is the side effects if one medication is taken with another are a few questions I would like to be answered. I would like to understand how the body works on a deeper and more confusing level than I could even imagine now. Life sciences cover such a wide variety of careers…
