I have decided to pursue a STEM degree as I believe this field is the foundation of advancement in our society. Though I believe all STEM fields are crucial to the progression and success of civilization, I am particularly amazed by the uncovered potential the health sciences hold for those who put in the work and effort to excel. The American healthcare industry is experiencing a streak of technological breakthroughs at an unimaginable rate, and I aspire to one day be a forerunner for innovators of the field to follow. I find this field unique in its intimacy to that of the average person, just one of the many things that give the health sciences their powerful allure. I was not the type of person to put herself in a position to be judged publicly on merit. Putting myself out to be judged was exactly what I had avoided all of my life. I looked through the glass door into the courtyard of the Longwood Campus and saw a single flower on its own in a flower garden. Suddenly, the words of my junior year English teacher on transcendentalism had bombarded my thought process. I realized in this moment that going to other countries or being the head of a club did not give someone value as a political leader as candidates before me had argued.
