C) Prior to ovulation, the female body begins to prepare for the introduction of sperm by maintaining a lower body temperature and producing an alkaline cervical mucus. In this sperm friendly environment, sperm may live between 3 and 5 days; however, when this fertile mucus is not present or basal body temperature has risen after ovulation, sperm may only live between 24 and 48 hours. F) The cervix carries out many critical functions that contribute to the overall reproductive health and wellbeing of women. The cervix is the portion of the uterus which is connected to the vaginal canal, and it allows the passage of menstrual fluid; It promotes fertility; It protects the uterus, upper reproductive tract, and a developing fetus from pathogens; And it may play a role in women’s sexual pleasure.  G) It detects the luteinizing hormone. The increase in LH production only lasts for 24 to 48 hours. This "LH surge" triggers ovulation, thereby not only releasing the egg from the follicle, but also initiating the conversion of the residual follicle into a corpus luteum that, in turn, produces progesterone to prepare the endometrium for a possible implantation. LH is necessary to maintain luteal function for the first two weeks of the menstrual cycle. If pregnancy occurs, LH levels will decrease, and luteal function will instead be maintained by the action of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), a hormone very similar to LH but secreted from the new placenta. H) It is minimal that Ryan and Megan would have dizygotic twins because the frequency of dizygotic twinning varies according to ethnic origin (the highest incidence occurs in African-Americans, the lowest in Asian-Americans, with Caucasians intermediate), maternal age (the highest rate occurs when the mother is 35 to 39 years of age), and heredity (showing an increase in the female genetic line rather than the male, although fathers may transmit the disposition to double ovulation to their daughters). I) High levels of progesterone are required throughout pregnancy with levels steadily rising until the birth of the baby. During the first few weeks of pregnancy, progesterone produced from the corpus luteum (a temporary endocrine gland of the ovaries) is sufficient to maintain pregnancy. At this early stage, progesterone has many diverse functions which are vital to the establishment of pregnancy. References
