A branch of psychology concerned with the links between biology and behavior.

A nerve cell; the basic building block of the nervous system.

The bushy, branching extensions of a neuron that receive messages and conduct impulses toward the cell body.

The extension of a neuron, ending in branching terminal fibers, which messages pass to other neurons or to muscles or glands.

A layer of fatty tissue segmentally encasing the fibers of many neurons

A neural impulse; a brief electrical charge that travels down an axon. The axon potential is generated by the movement of positively charged atoms in and out of channels in the axons membranes.

The level of stimulation required to trigger a neural impulse.

The junction between the axon tip of the sending neuron and the dendrite of the cell body of the receiving neuron.

Chemical messengers that traverse the synaptic gaps between neurons. When released

A neurotransmitter that enables learning and memory and also triggers muscle contraction.

Natural, opiate like neurotransmitters linked to pain control and to pleasure.

There are five major parts of a neuron, the axon, soma, dendrites, the axon hillock and the terminal buttons. The axon transmits the neural signal. The stoma is where signals from the dendrites are joined and passed on. It serves to maintain the cell and keep the neuron functional. The dendrites help increase the surface area of the cell body. They receive info from other neurons and transmit electrical stimulation to the stoma. The axon hillock controls the firing of the neuron. The terminal buttons are responsible for sending the signal on to other neurons.…

A neuron is a cell that can transfer a stimulus to another cell and is the basic unit in the nervous system. The cell body of the neuron is what contains the nucleus and the other organelles. The nucleus is where the DNA is stored. Dendrites extend from the cell, as do axons. Dendrites receive any incoming input while axons release signals out of the neuron.…

For a skeletal muscle fiber to contract, a stimulus must be applied to it. The stimulus is delivered by a nerve cell, or neuron. A neuron has a threadlike process called and axon that my run 91 cm or more to a muscle. A bundle of such fibers from man different neurons composes a nerve. A neuron that stimulates muscle tissue is called a motor neuron.…

A neuromuscular junction is a place in the body where the axons of motor nerves meet the muscle, thus transmitting messages from the brain which cause the muscle to contract and relax. Every organism has thousands of neuromuscular joints which are the locations and means by which the motor neuron of the nervous system that instructs the muscle cells of the muscular systems to take action. Action that , in turn lead to movements of muscles and other structures such as the tissues, bones, limbs that are controlled by muscles and it also causes the heart to beat. The neuromuscular joint is one of many connects made between nerves and other parts of the body which result in a successfully functioning organism. The neuromuscular junction is crucial for life and begin forming early in fetal development. As motor neurons develop, a protein called agrin is made. This stimulates the formation of a muscle specific kinase, which will build receptors for acetylcholine on the surface of the muscle fiber. Thus a neuromuscular junction is formed, with the neuron itself emitting the needed chemical for development. A neuromuscular joint begins with a neuron or nerve cell. Neurons also have long tails called an axon which terminated in dendrites, a bundle of fibers which can transmit chemicals to the next neuron. In the instance of a neuromuscular joint, a neuron can control many muscles, but each muscle can only respond to one neuron. Each muscle is individually stimulated by a motor neuron In order for muscles cells to contract. Nerve impulse traveling down the motor neuron of the sensory somatic branch of the nervous system causes the skeletal muscle fibers at which they terminate to contract. The junction between the terminal of the motor neuron and a fiber muscle is called a neuromuscular junction. The impulse reaches the terminal end of the motor neuron and breaks open the synaptic vesicles, releasing the…

    Why Are Neurons Important

Neurons are the essential tools we use for every sense that we have, from touch and sound, to critical thinking processes. While true that some neurons vary in many different kinds of shapes, most contain the same basic structure. A neuron consists of three parts: a cell body, dendrites, and an axon. The cell body contains the nucleus and the dendrites receive input from other neurons through the use of their widely branching structures. Dendrite comes from a Greek word meaning "tree". The axon transmits information to other cells. Differing from the dendrites, the axon is a long, thin fiber with branches at its tip.…
