Roy Cooper is the current Attorney General for North Carolina. He is a democrat and is running for Governor this election against the current Governor, Pat McCrory. Based on the views that he has expressed, he would be considered a Progressive. His stance on issues such as education, local and big businesses, and social justice are what make him a Progressive. One of the issues that Roy Cooper has made important in his campaign is the state of education in North Carolina. On his website, he makes it clear that he is the product of North Carolina public schools and believes that a few things can be done to improve them. Specifically, he has suggested that teacher’s assistants should not be laid off as frequently as they are and per-students
Under his education plan, he mentions wanting to end the trend of racially segregated charter schools. He has also said that he wants to reinstate some voting policies such as same day registration which benefits the lower class and repeal voter ID laws which may benefit immigrants. Lastly, he has stated that he would like to change North Carolina laws that have affected the state’s image and causes businesses to leave the state. In so many words, this means repealing the controversial HB-2 law with which many citizens disagreed. Attempting to solve social issues like the ones he has laid out is also a characteristic of Progressives. NC Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Roy Cooper could be classified as a Progressive because his campaign emphasizes reforming the education system, bringing more businesses and jobs to the state, and using policy to fight for social justice. In addition to these issues, his views on improving the environment and healthcare in North Carolina also show his interest in expanding government services, another typical trait of Progressives.
