Realizing that Rose was deceased hurt me Not understanding why every child I tried to bring into the world Revoked my invitation My ability to not keep a child made me feel less of a woman Knowing that the man I loved had multiple children with other Women And that I couldn’t provide him a child Angered me beyond comprehension As if I was a volcano ready to erupt At the time taking in Rose felt as the best thing that would make me Happy She gave me happiness like water gives a plant life She gave me love like words gives a poem importance

In Alice Walker’s short story Roselily, the reader is presented with a theme of alienation. Readers can come to this conclusion by simply reading the story and being presented with an overwhelming abundance of evidence supporting the nature of this theme. This evidence includes the fact that Roselily is an African American, unwed female with four children to different fathers, shunning her from society. Also, more confirmation comes in the form of Roselily having no connection or feelings for her soon to be husband, leaving her stuck in a loveless marriage. And the final proof of alienation in this story is Roselily’s hope for a better tomorrow.…

Once upon a time, there was a small town called Everbloom. In the, dense, green, woods that bordered that town lived a fiery “orphan” girl named Scarlet. The 17 year old had blazing red hair, ash grey eyes and olive skin that, from being in the woods most of her life, faded to relatively pale. She was known to be mysterious, but really she was just like any other anti-social teen. Well, sorta.…

Rose Maxson is a forty-three year old woman. She is the wife of Troy Maxson and mother of Cory Maxson. Typically Rose is seen cooking and/or cleaning. Through her actions, she is perceived as a woman who does everything they can to keep her loved ones close by and happy. She is a very selfless person. She offers food to anyone who comes to visit and also helps out financially where needed even when her financial situation is sparse. She is also loving and caring. She tends to show concern for others including her son, Cory, her brother-in-law, Gabriel, and even Bono and his significant other, Lucille. Rose has proven to be a loyal, responsible and realistic person. In Act I scene 3, when Troy was boasting about his athletic abilities and comparing his situation to Cory’s, Rose attempted to share her sense of reality with Troy. She reminded him that his age (and not his ability) was the reason he didn’t make it too far with baseball. She confessed her loyalty to Troy at the end of Act I scene 1 and continued to show loyalty by staying with him after he…

Thankfully, George didn't seem to be mad at me. He didn't seem to be mad at me at all. We were both beside the brush far away from the ranch, infront of a vast river. Across the river was the Gabilan mountain range, which reminded me of the rabbits that I would soon be able to tend with George. I asked him to tell me about the other guys an' about us, like he's done before. Then I asked him to tell me how it's gonna be in the future, at our farm. I love it when he talks about the farm, and the way he describes it is so dreamy. Once again, it felt as if I fell into a deep trance by George's words; I could imagine all the rabbits and the alfalfa, the cows, pigs, and chickens.. All in our very own farm where we have our own freedom. As George…

“Roselily”, written by Alice Walker, is a story about an African American woman that is getting married to a Muslim. As the preacher was going through the normal wedding rituals she reflected back on her past and the past of African Americans in general. Roselily thought about how her new life would be with her new man and wondered if her children would like him and get along with him. Roselily was also worried about moving and uprooting her family to a new, strange place. Roselily knew that she and her soon to husband would definitely have conflicting religious ideas, and she is not too happy about having to sit with a covered face in his place of worship. My favorite part though is when the preacher says, “to join this man and this woman”. The way Roselily thought of it as being bound and tied like a slave as her ancestors had been is just great, vivid description, and I can just picture Roselily and her man tied and bound together for the rest of their lives. I feel Roselily referred to her husband as nothing more than a ball and chain when she thought this.…

I chose this quote from Mitch to Blanche because it gives the understanding that at the end, nobody wants to be alone. Both Mitch and Blanche had been through the loved of a loved one (Mitch was going to lose his mother soon). Sadness worsens if it’s gone through alone.People just want to be with someone who understands what they’re going through. The felt such good connection because of their similar past (to his understanding), that he fell in love with him and although Blanche did not feel the same love, she wanted to marry him and not be alone anymore. As Mitch says his mother doesn’t want him to be alone after she dies,so as soon as mitch saw the opportunity he went for it.Sadly for Blanche, Mitch found out about her old ways and rapidly…

One foggy night I was with my friends. We just got done eating around 11:00. So we went outside real quick to get a smoke and we saw legs running through the alley as we walked out. We looked around for a minute because we were all suspicious. We didn’t know who it was or what it was all we know is we heard a loud yelp. But then all the sudden we looked down at the dumpster to a find a image in the dumpster. We all screamed in fright, we didn’t know what to do then we saw a girl running up and down the alley. We looked down and there was blood running down the dumpster this time. The legs were still dangling down. We thought we might have known the person but then we came to a conclusion that it wasn’t her. All that we know is the murder is a girl.…

Hello, Mr. Shep Huntleigh this is Blanche Dubois, I just wanted to write you to let you know how I have spent this amazing summer traveling all over the states. First of all, I had to get out of my large estate out in Mississippi; the maids and workmen almost drove me crazy. So I figured that a young and pure women like myself should get out and explore. I went down to New Orleans to pick up my sister, who was pregnant at the time, because she desired to get some fresh air, and see this beautiful world with me, so we went to my boat that I keep there. You should see my boat! A man with your wealth would love to be on my beauty-it is pearly white, lined with imported gold from africa. Little children were the ones who handled the gold lining because, as you know, a girl from wealth like me cannot bear to rest my eyes upon it if it has smudges. We decided to take the boat up to the big city in New York, and do what I do best: spending money. A girl like me just cannot seem to keep it longer than a couple days. You should have seen it when we arrived! All the people’s eyes were lying upon us,-hundreds and hundreds of people-but I enjoyed the attention all the same. So me and Stella went from store throwing money…

In "A Rose for Emily", William Faulkner uses a theme common to many of his works. The changing of values and attitudes in southern society. Miss Emily was born into a family, the Griersons, that were very established in the community. She was said to be "the last Greirson" in this southern community. The family was no longer wealthy, but continued to be held in high esteem after her father died. The only material thing her father left her was the family home. Miss Emily was left a pauper by her fathers' death . However, the most important thing left her was the Grierson name and all that it represented in that town. The Grierson name conveyed such respect on Miss Emily, that she was virtually untouchable by anything except her own personal tragic circumstances.…

In William Faulkner’s short story “A Rose for Emily” the specific elected passage is heavily rich in details dealing with setting and imagery. The line that starts off the passage sends a clear message of a long enclosed space. “The violence of breaking down the door,” shows that entering the aforementioned space was no easy feat and therefore had to be forced. The manner in which we can approach this precise detail is by stating that this was a room for used for solidarity or perhaps its purpose was a sanctuary closed off from the world.…
