Comparison: Romeo and Juliet vs. West Side Story
“Romeo and Juliet” Compared and Contrasted to “Westside Story”

“Westside Story” and “Romeo and Juliet” are both inspiring stories about two star-crossed lovers whose love is forbidden because of hatred between their groups, which leads to inevitable death. These two stories have an unquestionably wide range of similarities and differences as far as scenes and the characters that make the scenes differ or resemble to each other. The first and last scenes of “Romeo and Juliet” and “Westside Story” both resemble much similarities and differences to each other. The beginning scenes to “Romeo and Juliet” and “Westside Story” are very similar to each other. The beginning scenes were very similar to each other because of all the hatred in the air directed from one group to the other. This hatred led to both groups ruthlessly fighting and beating each other up. In both stories when this chaos broke out between the groups, the patrolling authority had to order them to stop. Apart from being similar the beginning scenes were also exceedingly different from each other. In “Romeo and Juliet” the sides talked about how much they hatted each other and with a hairline trigger, both sides snapped after one insult/remark. In “Westside Story” both sides were giving each other dirty looks and making each other feel uncomfortable enough for each side to gradually start fighting as opposed to right away. Like the first scenes, in the last scenes of “Romeo and Juliet” and “Westside Story” both differ and resemble each other. They are similar because both sides were starting to show less hate because the death of more and more peers triggered emotional feedback to both groups, as it would to anyone. Another deeply similarity in the last scenes of both movies is when the patrolling authority (police man/prince) brought shame upon the two groups and notified them that their hate for each other was responsible for the deaths which occurred. The ending scenes of “Romeo and Juliet” and “Westside Story” are also deeply different. Romeo and Juliet both died at the hands of themselves making it their own fault for their death, but in Westside Story only Tony dies and at the hands of Chino, therefore it was not Tony’s fault for his death. Another factor which differentiates “Westside Story” from “Romeo and Juliet” is after Tony died, although Tony is dead Maria does not possess the certainty to kill herself, unlike Juliet who deliberately wants Romeo even if it means killing herself. The first and last scenes of “Romeo and Juliet” and “Westside Story” both resemble many similarities and differences to each other. Romeo and Juliet is the story of the relationship between the son and daughter of two families, which are enemies, the Montagues and the Capulets. Their families are against their plan to marry, and the story ends in the death of both lovers. A young man from one gang falls in love with a young woman whose brother is in the other gang. These young lovers, too, die at the end of the story. West Side Story concerns itself more with culture and prejudice, while in Romeo and Juliet, the enmity between the two families is more about political power than culture.…

What would Romeo and Juliet be like if Juliet hadn't died? What if Paris killed Romeo, instead of vice versa? What if instead of occurring several centuries ago, it took place on the streets of New York City during the 1950s, with a bunch of fresh-faced youths posing as street toughs and dancing and singing their hearts out? Well, just take a look at West Side Story, and you will have your answers. It is impossible for anyone familiar with both texts to not note the obvious major similarities between the two plays. From the opening scenes in both, up through the rumble in West Side Story/death of Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, the plays mirror each other (Poelstra). It isn't until the last part of West Side Story, where Tony, our modern-day Romeo, dies and Maria, Tony's Juliet, doesn't (unlike the two star-crossed lovers of Shakespeare's work), that the major difference between the two works becomes apparent.…

One of the obvious differences between Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story is the setting. Romeo and Juliet is set in Venice, Italy in the 13th century. Whereas West Side Story is set in Manhattan, New York in the late 1950s. This difference in setting is most evident in the language usage from each time period. One perk of West Side Story having a setting at a later, more recent, time is that it gives a more modern understanding on Romeo and Juliet. However, despite this major difference, the two works have parallel places for the major plot points of the story. For example, the two lovers meet at a social gathering in each story.…

A major similarity between the movie and play occurs in mood. An example of this is the marriage scene. In the marriage scene of the play, Romeo and Juliet act very serious. The reader can tell this by the way the two speak. Romeo says that the Holy Words the Friar speaks can make something without an equal which is a very intelligent thing to say. Similarly in the movie Romeo and Juliet both act serious. This is shown through there clothes, faces, and by the way they act. Romeo wears a suit, and Juliet wears a beautiful dress. Also you can tell by there faces that they look determined to get married and they both act very professional their not jumping around like 5 years olds their acting how people should be when they are getting married.…

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is considered to be one of the greatest love stories of all time. It is the tragic tale of two star crossed lovers; Romeo of the house of Montague and Juliet of the house of Capulet. Both houses have an ongoing feud with the other that had yet to be broken, until Romeo and Juliet fell desperately in love and were secretly married. Their relationship was doomed when Juliet’s cousin Tybalt and Romeo and his friend Mercutio ended up in a duel where Tybalt slayed Mercutio and Romeo Slayed Tybalt. In order to be together Juliet fakes her death and awaits Romeo to find her. Miscommunication occurs and in the end both lovers end up taking their own lives for love. Many adaptations of Shakespeare’s original story have been created but the most popular of that is West Side Story (music by Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Berstein and book by Arthur Laurents). In West Side Story we are introduced to two rival gangs; “the jets”( who are Caucasian) and ‘the Sharks” (who are immigrant Peurto Ricans). Both gangs are competing for power and control of the streets. Tony who is a retired Jet falls for Maria who is tied to “the Sharks”. Their love is instantaneous and would be rejected by all of society if anyone found out, so they keep it hidden. The two gangs decide to have on final rumble to determine the superior gang, however in the fight the two leaders end dying. Tony killed “the Sharks” leader and is forced to flee town, hopefully with Maria at his side. Before everything can work out Tony hears that Maria has been killed (which is not true) so he sets out to be killed himself. The play ends with Tony getting shot and dying in Maria’s arms. Both Romeo and Juilet and West Side Story have a lot in common as well as many differences. Although Maria and Juliet reflect each other in age and situation, there are many differences that give them unique distinction. West Side Story differs from Romeo and Juliet in personal…
