Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet is a play written by Shakespeare set in 1300 AD. Different forms of power are presented in the play such as ,power of pride, love and destiny. The prologue is written in the form of sonnet with twelve rhyming lines and another final two lines which rhyme differently. The chorus written using assonance “from forth the fatal loins of these two foes a pair of star crossed lovers take their life “introduces the play and provides dramatic view of the tragedy that’s about to be performed . The description of eventual death of Romeo and Juliet creates a sense of fate forming link between love and destiny.This highlights the power of fate from the begnning .on the other hand the prologue tells the renewal of the feud and rage between the families to indicate the power of pride.
Power of fate is reflected as Romeo speaks about the future “my mind misgives some consequence yet hanging in the stars” “fearful date” foreshadowing sense of fate and destiny .Shakespeare also uses anthesis”married to the grave” to show the power of fate and juliet can not escape her fate of dying.Thu we are reminded of the doomed “star crossed lovers” mentioned in the prologue again.
Power of pride is also displayed with rhyming words “slave “face “an alliteration, ” fetch me my rapier” an assonnance,”flesh tremble” and sibilance ”scorn at our soleminity” highlighting the power implied in Tybalt. The power is reflected by his frustration and anger due to Romeo’s presence in the party as he is part of the family that his family was in a feud with.
Throughout the play Juliet increasingly showed her power over Romeo, The first instance that Juliet shows her indirect power over Romeo was the very moment Romeo laid his eyes upon her. Romeo says , “Oh she doth teach the torch to burn bright! “in a soliloquy with alliteration to describe the power of attraction exerted in him as she was shining in his eyes.A similie”like a rich jewel in an ethiope’s ear”and the use of
