'Romanticism In A Rose For Emily'

Edgar Allen Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Emily Dickinson are just some of the few authors who wrote gothic literature stories. American Romanticism was used to show the reactions to the restrictions of the puritans during the 1800’s. The purpose of Gothic literature was and still is to entertain, to present a moral, and to inspire improvement of oneself through imagination. Desolate location, ghost or spirit, use of symbols, an attempt to escape for a moment are some characteristics that dark romanticism uses. Of course not all gothic stories have to have every single element listed to be considered gothic literature. “A rose for Emily” is a Gothic story.
One reason why “A Rose for Emily” is a gothic story is because it has someone who is insanely crazy. Emily, the main character, keeps her dad at her house for few days sitting there dead until finally city officials come to pick up his body. Secondly, Emily goes to the store to buy rat poisoning. While you might think she is going to use it for a rat infestation around her house that’s not exactly what she uses it for. She uses it to kill Homer Barron and ends up sleeping with him up to 40 years even though he is already dead. The symbol in “A Rose for Emily” was very weak as it was only stated in the title. Also, the location was not very desolate since it was located in a very populated town. But for some gothic stories you have to dig deeper to find the answer.
