Roman Tech
The Roman military technology ranged from personal equipment and armament to deadly siege engines. [ They inherited almost all ancient weapons. While heavy, intricate armor was not uncommon (cataphracts), the Romans perfected a relatively light, full torso armour made of segmented plates (lorica segmentata). This segmented armour provided good protection for vital areas, but did not cover as much of the body as lorica hamata or chainmail. The lorica segmentata provided better protection, but the plate bands were expensive and difficult to produce and difficult to repair in the field. Overall, chainmail was cheaper, easier to produce, cheaper and simpler to maintain, was one-size fits all, and was more comfortable to wear thus, it remained the primary form of armor even when lorica segmentata was in use. The Roman cavalry saddle had four horns [2] and was believed to have been copied from Celtic peoples. Roman siege engines such as ballistas, scorpions and onagers were not unique. But the Romans were probably the first people to put ballistas on carts for better mobility on campaigns. On the battlefield, it is thought that they were used to pick off enemy leaders. There is one account of the use of artillery in battle from Tacitus, Histories III,23: On engaging they drove back the enemy, only to be driven back themselves, for the Vitellians had concentrated their artillery on the raised road that they might have free and open ground from which to fire; their earlier shots had been scattered and had struck the trees without injuring the enemy. A ballista of enormous size belonging to the Fifteenth legion began to do great harm to the Flavians' line with the huge stones that it hurled; and it would have caused wide destruction if it had not been for the splendid bravery of two soldiers, who, taking some shields from the dead and so disguising themselves, cut the ropes and springs of the machine.

A Persian soldier wore a corset covered in metal plates under his tunic and carried with him a gerron, a shield traditionally made of leather and wicker. While it was suitable for stopping arrows, it offered little protection against Greek spears. Greek soldiers were far more heavily armored. The battle regalia of the Greek soldier consisted of a helmet, a breastplate, leg guards and a shield called a hoplon. Like all armor of this time the helmet was constructed of bronze and covered most of the face and head. The breastplate was a bronze affair that was built to protected the entire torso or a simpler version where the a bronze plate was sewn onto the front of a leather tunic. The leg guards were shaped bronzed covered the leg from knee to ankle. Finally, Greek soldiers carried with them a large round shield called a hoplon giving the Greek soldiers their name:…

Their adoption was revolutionary, for it enabled a heavily armored horseman to retain his balance in the saddle whilst using a weighty spear, sword, or lance. (Seth-Smith, 28) As technology advanced so did the weapons used. Knights going into battle would be equipped with swords and daggers, the most common weapons used in hand to hand combat. Blades were specially designed for its owner so weight, length, and handle design all varied (Jordan 180). Some knights would be skilled enough to shoot a bow and arrow while riding their horse. Armor was used to cover both the knight and his horse. Another weapon that was used while riding the horse was the lance. This was a 9 to 14 foot pole made of wood with a steel tip. It would be used to unhorse enemies. Scale armor was one of the earliest forms of armor made from bronze, iron, leather, and even bones. The problem with this type of armor is that knights were not able to maneuver while riding on their horse. This problem was fixed with the later invention of chain mail armor. This was made from metal rings linked together to form a mesh (Jordan 181). All of these weapons and armors were used in battle by knights, who took all of the same items and turned them to…

Though this would be the primary dominate force on the battlefield, Rome actually lost battles because they were primarily heavy infantry. Roman soldiers adopted fighting tactics of other forces and enemies to become the most elite force on the battle field. Starting out, soldiers fought like the Greek worriers known as hoplites. Hoplites were essentially an infantry man armed with a shield and spear, which were on reserve until called to battle. The tactics that were adopted from the Hoplites was a formation called the Phalanx. This formation consisted of soldiers lining up shoulder to shoulder with their weapon in one hand and shield in the opposite. Not only did this help with shields protecting one another, it made lines impenetrable for arrows, spears and enemy as long as they maintained a solid line side by side.2…

To begin with, military weakness was a big factor in the fall of Rome. According to Document B, “...armor began to seem heavy since the soldiers rarely ever wore it.” This shows that the soldiers were very lethargic and couldn’t protect the empire effectively. They stopped doing their ground drills and never wore the breastplates. When war came to Rome they weren’t prepared to wear the armor, so instead they fought with…

I think Rome was an Empire under the Republic. Differences were the forms of government. In the Republic the people had voting rights and would elect the officials, the Republic was a system based on the rule of law, and a cleverly balanced constitution that was not a written document, but consisted of an accord between the 3 elements, democracy, monarchy, and oligarchy. On the other hand the Empire or Principate, a system based on an emperor. One man had total, absolute power. In the republic there was a collective form of government; in the Principate it was a one man rule (Emperor). Both the Roman Republic and Roman Empire had periods of instability which ultimately caused their demise. Interestingly, each lasted for almost the same amount of time, so it would be difficult to ascertain one as more "successful" than the other. The Roman Republic controlled most of the Italian Peninsula and soon spread into the Mediterranean, they came in conflicts and things started getting hard. Although the dying republic was ruled for a short time by the famous triumvirate; it soon collapsed with the death of Crassus and Julius Caesar became the first Roman Emperor. The Empire itself lasted no longer than the Republic, but its territorial gains were considerably more extensive. The Empire extended to Britain in the West, and to the banks of the Rhine and Danube Rivers in the East. It encompassed vast numbers of people and thereby spread Roman culture throughout Western Europe. The empire was brought about largely by Caesar who was a man of the people and rose on a popularist platform of protecting the citizens rights against the greed of the senate and redistributing wealth.…

The first recorded use of metals being used for personal protection dates before the medieval period and is thought to have originated in Eastern Europe where natives in Asia used iron rings that had been sewn to fabrics for protection. The Asian natives called this type of armour ring mail, which would later be known across the world as chain mail however chain mail was not discovered by the rest of the world until the Romans started to use it and chain mail was not truly developed until the medieval era. Before the Romans discovery of chain mail, the Romans used brass, iron and bronze to make armour, however their armour did not provide them with sufficient protection from the types of weapons that were currently available in that time period…

A Ballista was one of the siege engines used during the Medieval Era and was an invaluable siege attack weapon. The Ballista was used by both the attackers and defenders as an effective anti-personal weapon. For defenders the positioning upon the walls of a fortification would afford additional range to the weapon, and some were placed on pivoting frames to allow for quickly repositioning a shot. For attackers, the Ballista was sometimes a wagon mounted carro-ballista, allowing it great mobility in the field.…

According to Doc. B, before the year 400 CE, Roman soldiers had worn breastplates and helmets. But when the Romans had started getting lazy, they started to neglect the armor. Parade ground drills were eventually abandoned, and the emperor had ultimately set aside the customary armor. When they fought the Goths, archers easily took them out since they weren’t wearing any head or chest protection. Since they had set aside parade ground drills and armor, once they were exposed to wounds, they ended up running instead of fighting. The Roman army became weaker and weaker due to the lack of soldiers. They failed to draft people, and the categories of people who could be excused from the army were numerous, as stated in Document B. Additionally, as stated in Document D, the Romans also had to worry about a powerful enemy, the Huns, who were invading them. While the Huns were traveling through the Roman empire, they marauded countless of villages. The Huns could easily overpower the Romans. They could withstand the freezing cold, hunger, and even thirst, meanwhile the Roman army could barely withstand heavy armor. Due to military mistakes, many villages were pillaged, and numerous amounts of Roman soldiers…
