Roman History and Culture: Roman Gods and Goddesses A major portion of Roman History and Culture are the Gods and Goddesses of ancient Rome. The Romans deeply believed in mythology and that there was a god for nearly every aspect of life. Many of the gods and goddesses covered more than one aspect of life. There were many major and minor gods that were believed in by the Romans. One of the major deities, or Gods, of Roman times was the Queen of the Gods, Juno. Juno was the daughter of Saturn. She was also the mother of Juventas, Mars, and Vulcan. She was Jupiter’s wife and sister, she was also a sibling to Neptune and Pluto. She protected all or Rome’s finances, she was also known as the Matron Goddess of Rome. June was named for her. As
Ceres was said to be the daughter of Saturn and Ops, and the mother of Proserpine. She was known to be the Goddess of agriculture, motherhood, marriage, and civilization. She had several names such as: Corn Goddess, Eternal Mother, Sorrowing Mother, and Grain Goddess. She was worshipped at her temple on Aventine hill. Diana was another Goddess, and as previously mentioned, she was the twin of Apollo. Diana was usually seen with a bow and arrow or a stag in Roman art. She was the Goddess of nature, fertility, forests, mountains, woods, childbirth, moon, animals, and women. She also had several names such as: Mother of Creatures, Lunar Virgin, Moon Goddess, and Huntress Goddess. Diana was worshiped at a sacred grove beside Lake Nemi, near Rome. As God of War, Mars was also an important God. Mars was the son of Jupiter and Juno. He was husband to Bellona, and he was the father of the twins Remus and Romulus. He was God of spring, nature growth, terror, revenge, anger, courage, and fertility. Mars was known as the father of the Roman people because he was the father to Romulus, whom was said to be the founder of Rome after eliminating his brother.
