Abstract
Pressure, strain, anxiety, constant worry, nervous tension, depression are the common symptoms that women in the IT/ITes sector go through. Role stresses are known to influence the experience of burnout. Work related stress adversely affects personal performance, organizational efficiency (Hawksley, Barbara). Organizational role stress originates in organizational demands that are experienced by the individual. Employees may also bring stress caused by family and financial problems off the job to affect on the job situation. This paper visualizes the intensity of organizational role stress among women employees in Information Technology. The Research investigates differences in the level of stress between married and unmarried employees on several role stressors. Pareek’s Organizational Role Stress (ORS) scale was used to measure ten types of role stress.

Introduction
Stress has always been a part of human existence. Its origin can be traced in the literature to the 17th Century when it was identified with hardship, straits, adversity or affliction as meant by the Latin word: Stringere. In the 18th and 19th Centuries, the meaning of stress changed to denote force, pressure, strain or strong effort with reference to an object or person (Hinkle 1973). Role stress results from problems encountered in role performance. When these problems are confronted or resolved, the resulting role stress reduces or gets eliminated. This in turn promotes enhanced well-being of the role occupant and enhanced performance and effectiveness at the individual and organizational levels. Homogeneity of role stress indicates that the same kind of problems are prevailing throughout the organization and the same kind of solutions/interventions hold good for all parts of the organization. Heterogeneity of role stress, on the other hand, signifies that different kinds of problems are prevailing in different parts of the organization and different kinds of solutions/interventions are required for different parts of the organization. Realization of these differences is useful for formulating a contingency model for enhancing organizational performance and effectiveness. While the signs of role stress can vary significantly from person to person, cognitive impairment is common. Indecision, forgetfulness, negative thinking, loss of confidence and a lack of concentration are all classic symptoms. The paper is organized in five parts. The first part explains the concept of stress and how it is experienced in organizational roles. The second part describes the evolution of role stress framework. The third part develops the rationale for the study, and defines the hypotheses and objectives of the study. The fourth part deals with methodology employed for the study and results obtained about heterogeneity of role stress. The final part of the paper comprises discussions and conclusions about the findings and their implications for contemporary policies and practices of human resource management.

Literature Review
