Role Of Greed In Macbeth
“Leadership is a privilege to better the lives of others. It is not an opportunity to satisfy personal greed” (Mwai Kibaki). This quote, from the former president of Kenya, ties in perfectly with Macbeth’s thirst for power. In William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, Macbeth murders King Duncan, knowing that he would become king when Duncan died instead of waiting to see if the prophecy would come true without forcing it. Greed holds the most power in influencing the actions of others. To begin with, Lady Macbeth urges her husband to kill king Duncan so she can share power with Macbeth. Lady Macbeth says, “Thou’d’st have, great Glamis, / That which cries “Thus thou must do,” if thou have it, / And that which rather thou dost fear

The witches meet with Macbeth they say, “All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter” (I.iii.50). They are telling Macbeth that he is going to be the future king some day and then that leads to Macbeth making some poor decisions. When the witches told Macbeth the prophecy that sparked many ideas in his head. The witches might be powerful in some ways, but greed has the most impact on people’s actions. When Banquo and Macbeth meet the three witches, the witches tell Banquo that one of his children will be king someday, and Macbeth did not like the sound of that so Macbeth decides to act on it. Macbeth says to himself, “Upon my head they placed a fruitless crown / And put a barren scepter in my grip” (III.i.60-61). Macbeth is saying that he killed king Duncan just so Banquo’s children would be king. He is thinking that he killed Duncan for no reason. After a while, Macbeth orders assassins to kill Banquo and his son, but his son escapes.
Greed is the most powerful thing that influences the actions of others. After Macbeth hears about the prophecy, he knows that he is going to become king sooner or later. He gets the chance to kill the king and he does, leaving himself the title of king. Greed took over Macbeth and it even traveled into Lady Macbeth’s head too.
