A current dispute among teens in America is the age you have to be to get into a rated-R movie. Movie Theaters in the area are now requiring that you are 17+ years of age to be allowed into the movies without being accompanied by a parent. Parents are no longer allowed to buy their children’s ticket and leaving afterwards, they must remain and watch they movie with their child. If you are suspected of being underage you will be asked to show I.D. and if not you will be removed from the movie theater without a refund. Is it fair for the parents or children? Due to many violent attacks of teenagers and children, the government decided to crack down on the age for watching certain rated movies. They feel the limit to these graphic movies will limit the violence they see and that can potentially inspire some of these children. They enforced photo identification to be seen before allowed to purchase a movie ticket for rated R movies and if under 17 you must be chaperoned by a legal guardian. The government and many others believe that this policy and enforcement will keep it safer for many costumers and reduce the violent attacks from teens. The government states that a R-rated motion picture may include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements, so that parents are counseled to take this rating very seriously. In addition, parents are strongly urged to find out more about R-rated motion pictures in determining their suitability for their children. I believe that you should not have to wait until your 17 to get into an R-rated film by yourself. All together it is unfair and demeaning to us as young adults. As a teenager, it is all about freedom and being able to do things without our parents always having to be there or do it for us. I feel this policy is taking away from that little bit of freedom we get and at the same time reducing the

At the age of eighteen, a teenager is given the rights of any adult automatically with the exception of being allowed to drink alcohol and a few other minor things. Eighteen year olds are given the right to vote, to sign a contract in their name, to enlist in the armed forces without parental consent, to apply for credit under you’re their own name, get married to their significant other, and etc. Having the right to do these things makes it clear that an eighteen year old is mature enough to make life altering decisions. Many people ask, “Why are these ‘adults’ not allowed to drink alcohol until the age of twenty one?” People believe that the answer to this question is that having the minimum drinking age at twenty one will save lives and prevent people under the age of twenty one from drinking. If this law is actually doing what it was expected to do, anyone can look and see if raising the drinking age to twenty one helped any of the problems stated…

The problem is the people question why the drinking age is 21 and not 18 when can you buy tabaco legally at the age of 18 and you can’t buy alcohol at 18 too. I believe the drinking age should be 21 because teen’s brains are not done growing at the age of 18 and they could be damaged. My first reason is that when the law was moved to 21 the drunk driving dropped. My second reason is that when teens start drinking at such a young age they can have several health problems when they get older so by making it 21 it will lower the risk of having health problems when you get older. My third reason is that teens could become violent or have destructive behaviors.…

Censorship is seen all over society in today’s world. Why do you think that there are ratings for movies? It is well aware that not all movies are appropriate. For everyone in general public. These “mature” scenes are therefore viewed in a private theatre which only those of the mature age can observe. If this point of censorship were not valid in today’s society, there would be no need for ratings and movies would just be played on an outdoor screen, available for all to see!…

I believe censorship is acceptable because it’s very much needed in today’s society. Not all movies or music are meant for a younger age group. There are specific genres and ratings for children because most adults believe they should be “shielded” from the topics discussed or depicted. The NC-17 rating is perfect for those people who enjoy seeing brains ripped out of a person’s head. Also censorship is acceptable because there is larger variety of movies for parents to see while their child watches a PG…

needs to stick up for underage kids to save lives. Also, by lowering the drinking age more teens could have access to alcohol which could increase deaths each year due to driving under the influence. Sexual assaults, violence, and injuries also indicate dangerous actions that could take place (Moyse). A survey showed that 78 percent of adults support 21 as the drinking age and 72 percent believe lowering the drinking age would cause adolescents younger and younger to want to drink (Moyse). The old saying, that many underage drinkers use, is “let’s make up for lost time” which makes them inexperienced once they start. Adults can problem solve, behave better and make logical decisions, whereas adolescents do not. Teens are known for acting on impulse, getting into all kinds of accidents, fights, taking part in risky behaviors, and not thinking before they act…

Violent movies are a part of us, it’s what forms us as people. I know I have seen many violent movies none of which would make me want to go out and hurt someone, I find the tv shows or movies to be entertaining. I don’t understand the reasoning behind the legislature considering this, but I think they should just butt out honestly, it’s a tv show, a movie. So we may have a few bad eggs in our society that want to hurt people from watching violent programs, but why punish the rest of us because of a few people.…

Evan Brown English Composition 102 Miss Baals Censorship paper MPAA: Who Are They Helping? American Psycho, A Clockwork Orange, Boys Don’t Cry, and Clerks. What do all these movies have in common? They were all rated NC-17 at first viewing. The reason why they were rated as such is the real issue. They were rated NC-17 for the sexual content, either shown or talked about. The way in which it was presented in these movies made the MPAA give it an NC-17 rating. The MPAA found it offensive and inappropriate. The violence, some of it quite gruesome, was seen as less offensive and inappropriate according to the MPAA. Despite their best efforts in trying to protect children and what they’re subjected to, the MPAA is utterly useless. The internet provides easy access to pornography and other sexual content by the click of a mouse. The boundaries made by the MPAA in regards to sexual content are unclear most of the time and the rating is inconsistent and gender biased. The MPAA has worn out its usefulness and should be entirely eliminated and replaced with a more democratic, fair and open rating system.…

Do you like having your parents driving you around where you need to go? Or having to go places on your parents time because their busy or too tired to drive? No teen want that, especially if they can drive themselves. They are trying to establish a new law that teen can get their licenses when they turn 18 when they are more responsible instead of 16. The 16 year old driving age should stay the same instead of trying to increase the age because it can teach teens more about responsibility, gives teens more freedom, and they can just increase the practice driving hours instead of the age.…

At the age of 18 you are legally considered an adult in the U.S. It entitles you to what you would think to be the freedoms of a responsible adult. You can vote, get married, join the army and fight for our country, and even sign contracts. But somehow you’re not considered mature enough to have a sip of alcohol? This law should be considered discrimination against young adults in the 18-20 age range. What many people don’t know, is the real reason why we have the world’s highest drinking age. In 1984 congress threatened to reduce highway funding for all states who did not raise their minimun purchase age and public possession of alcohol laws. Of course all U.S. states complied with this act, nationally raising the legal age. They say it’s…

Just because a person lives to be twenty-one does not determine how mature they are. For example, there are many teenagers in the world that are considerably to be more mature than the average twenty-one year old adult. When eighteen year olds are at a party or any place where there is drinking, most will not drink. The environments itself will tell an eighteen to behave and not to get out of hand. If they do drink, they will drink in consideration. But when a twenty-one year old is at a party or any place where there is drinking, most if not all will act in a wild manner. The determination of legality in drinking should not be based on age, but rather based on maturity and the ability to handle responsibility. The twenty-one restriction seems to be out of date in today’s society. Many parents of today’s teenagers were legally allowed to…

Teenagers are already aware of the topics which movies receive R ratings for. Movies receive R ratings for three main reasons: Adult language, adult situations, and extreme violence. These are things that are known about and in some cases even seen in everyday life by the time you are 16. Many people use "adult" language now. Most teenagers even use it and those that don't use it hear it constantly. "Adult" situations, generally sexual, are not an issue by the time somebody is 16. In an R-rated movie these situations are implied and not shown. Sex education is taught in public schools, so 16-year-olds are very aware of sex. Violence is shown all the time on television and in video games, which 16-year-olds can see anytime. Seeing these things in a movie won't make them any more or less aware of them and likely to do them.…

Eighteen is a big age to turn. It makes the difference in how the world sees us and treats us. At eighteen we can vote on the nation’s president, be tried as an adult, fight for our country, and even win thousands of dollars by buying lottery tickets. So the questions then lie, why are eighteen-year olds are deprived of the right to drink alcohol? Is it politically correct of the government to generalize all teenagers and young adults into a group labeled not trustworthy? If society truly believes that the current drinking age reflects a just representation of the maturity of minors, then how does this level of maturity level lead them to believe that minors are able to help decide the country’s future or risk their lives to defend this nation? The current drinking age of twenty-one constantly mocks young adults and I believe it would better for the country if the drinking age was lowered.…
