“Belief in religious freedom was central to the development of some colonies, while in other colonies such freedom was denied.”
Many Europeans moved to the New World, one of the few reasons why some people moved to the New World was because of religious freedom. Someone once said, “Belief in religious freedom was central to the development of some colonies, while in other colonies such freedom was denied.” I do believe that one of the main reasons why people came to the New World was because of religious freedom. Through the history of the Colonies in the Americas, you can see that many Europeans came to the Americas for religious freedom.
In the early 1500s, King Henry VIII found the Church of England. The Church of England, or also known as Anglican Church, was controlling a lot of situations something that the government should. In other words, the church was getting way too much power in the nation, people felt that the church wasn’t pure and would protest against the church. This group of people protesting were known as the Puritans. They were known as Puritans because they wanted to “purify” the Church of England. The Puritans wanted to change governing and structure of the Church of England, they wanted the change to take place in the early 1600s, when James I was in charge. James I felt that the Puritans were a threat to him, he had the Puritans arrested. Once the Puritans heard about the New World and how there was religious freedom they knew that they should go there. In 1630, the Puritans arrived to the New World, hoping that they will have no problem with their religion. The Puritans arrived in Massachusetts Bay Colony, where it’s also known as Boston. The Puritans had one task which was to reform the Church of England NOT to destroy it. One of their leaders was John Winthrop, he once said, that if they honored their god they would be blessed but once they failed they would be punished.
The Puritans went to the Americas for one reason, to have religious freedom and to reform the Church of England.
The Puritans went to the Americas to reform the Church of England, meanwhile; most of the people in that group wanted to create their own group in the Americas, soon they were known as separatists. Separatists was a group of people that did NOT want to reform the Church of England in the Americas. Like the Puritans, they went to the Americas because of religious freedom. Like the Puritans, the Separatist developed their own colony which was called Plymouth Colony. Their plan was to create a completely new church that was pure, one that was independent of royal control. In 1620, the Pilgrims, how many also referred the separatist as, were on their way for a new colony in the Americas where they’re was religious freedom, they landed where today is known as Massachusetts, their plan was to go to Jamestown but they ended up creating a colony in Plymouth. The Pilgrims traveled for almost two months to reach the new world, to have free religious freedom.
As you can see the Separatist and Puritans were groups of people that wanted to get out of England to have religious freedom. This proves the veracity of the statement, people did go the Americas for religious freedom, well at least a good amount of them.
