Robert E. Lee

Robert E. Lee was a battlefield commander who graduated from WestPoint academy and, became commander of the Virginia forces during the civil war. He was eventually became commander of the confederate forces during the civil war and won many of his battle the most famous of them being the second battle of bull run. Unfortunately, he surrendered the last major confederate force to union leader Ulysses S. Grant at the battle of Appomattox Court House.
January 31st 1865 Robert E. Lee was appointed commander and chief of the confederate troops. During the beginning of the war Robert E. Lee wanted to train slaves to fight for the confederate forces. He offered emancipation to any slave and there family whom fought for the war. The south never fully took on this idea and therefore had far less forces in total. This eventually led to the downfall of confederate.
Towards the end of the war when the south started to lose the civil war, Robert E. Lee demanded a march on northern territory. The battle that ensued from this march was the three day long battle of Gettysburg. Robert E. Lee met forces led by George G. Meade in south central Pennsylvania and began what became the bloodiest battle in American history. The body count totaled 51,000 men on both sides dead.
Although Lee was an intelligent commander he still lost a combined total of 230,000 southern soldiers. His biggest enemies were not the north but, hunger and disease. He lost more troops to wounds sustained on the battle field than men who died in battle.
Today Lee is remembered as a great southern leader and even in the north after his death he gained a lot of popularity for his logistics used during battles. "Gettysburg was the price the South paid for having Robert E. Lee as commander.”. The meaning of the battles that Robert E Lee fought in will not be forgotten. Today he is remembered alongside Ulysses S. grant, Jefferson Davis, and Abraham Lincoln.

What was supposed to last 90 days, now dragged on for more than two years. It was apparent, now more than ever, that little was being accomplished but the taking of hundreds of thousands of lives. The war between the Union and Confederacy had been in a sort of deadlock where each side could claim victories as easy as defeats. By this time the south had the upper hand "militarily wise," just coming off a magnificent tactical victory at Chancellorsville in May. General Lee headed the Confederacy's, Army of Northern Virginia, General Meade headed the Union's Army of the Potomac. Both sides saw the need to win that one, crucial victory to turn the tide completely in their favor. They would get their chances at a small town in Pennsylvania. Lee, who is from Virginia, had very traditional and old fashioned beliefs. He strongly believed in the idea that having unequal, leadership, and social categories provided an advantage to society. The Confederacy embraced Lee as their leader as well. Furthermore, Confederate soldiers considered Lee the symbol of everything for which they had been willing to die for. On the other hand, Grant was raised very differently from Lee, his father had been a tanner on the Western frontier, and he was brought to be a hardworking man and to make something of himself. Grant primarily focused on democracy and believed that no individual was born into any type of class. Moreover, he believed that society should have privileges that each man should win for themselves and not just have privileges because you were born into an aristocratic family. He is seemingly the complete opposite of Lee in his belief that each person has the ability to work hard and gain their own good fortunes. Grant believed in a balanced social structure that did not limit anyone to any particular fate. He believed that life was a competition and everyone should get the chance to reach their limits. Grant had a more modern outlook on life and Lee would rather live in accordance with the past. Also, Lee and Grant were most different when it came to loyalty. Lee saw himself very much in relation to his own region. He was brought up in a static society where change was not known. Therefore, his loyalty would only be to the society in the location he lived and would…
