Robert Gladwell's 'Trouble With Geniuses'
1. Robert Sternberg coins the term “practical intelligence” on page 101. Explain. Do you feel you hold a good grasp of practical intelligence? Highlight four ways this semester, either at school, work or play that you believe will help you build practical intelligence.
In “Trouble with Geniuses”, Gladwell explains one important skill that one must have in order to become an outlier. The author states that readers often jump to a conclusion that success is determined by ones IQ or talent. However, those are not the factors that determine success. It is practical intelligence that one must have in order to be successful in life. Practical intelligence can be defined as one’s ability to adapt and learn everyday by the surrounding environments. Overall, practical environment is common sense. It is the ability to learn through completing an everyday task.
Certainly, I do not consider myself as a person with high IQ or any talents, but I can confidently say I have a good grasp of practical intelligence. Whether it is at work or at school, I know what to say, how to say it and when to say it. For instance, in the first example when authority makes an error or does something unethical, individuals are allowed to question the quality of these actions. Therefore, people are allowed to speak up and say something against the authority. Secondly, people treat each other as equals, regardless of their status or position.
