Roanoke Research Paper
Once there was an English colony named Roanoke. When it was settled, Jamestown sent out about 100 English settlers to build the colony. The settlers were upset about the natives and killed the chiefs son! The native Americans retaliated and vanquished all of Roanoke's settlers. Jamestown got word that Roanoke was taken over but instead of choosing to leave the colony there and never settle near it, Jamestown sent back 117 settlers! John White the leader of the settlement choose to bring his wife, and daughter (who was pregnant!) to the colony with him to settle. They created shelters to last the winter and planted crops, and obtained a safe source of water. Suddenly a drought hit the colony, they lost clean water, crops and all 117 were starving! …show more content…
He was forced to stay in Europe for 3 YEARS! Finally he sailed back to Roanoke with supplies, but when he got there he didn't see any evidence of the colonies existence! Not one nail scrap or bead was left. John White spent the next 5 years searching the island for his family. He only found 3 clues which were a neatly piled skeleton, the word KRO carved into a tree, and the word Croatoan carved into a fence. The only explanation that makes sense is that the native Americans from the nearby tribe Algonquians were "determined to resist the English who were settling on their land" (All Colonist were killed by Indians) and they wanted to fight back also because the original 100 settlers burned the natives crop fields! After killing the settlers, the indians would have had plenty of time to loot all of the villages supplies. This explanation explains that "there were colonist friendly natives called the croatoans which explains the word carved into the fence." (All colonist were killed by Indians) and the letters KRO carved into the tree. "The Croatoans went to war around the time the settlers came" and you can tell that the pile of bones was a warning to either the Croatoans or the Algonquians to stay away. Overall The theory that The settlers were killed by Indians is the best

Around 300 settlers migrated to Jamestown and arrived on May 14, 1607 and already constructing their forts also while arriving, they were being attacked by the neighboring natives the Powhatan. While that discontinues, they have already established in the luscious fertile soil, they try to produce and accomplish their profit and trade of cash crops that are compatible to tobacco and other pricey goods. But everything goes downhill in the interest of of disease, famine, and sporadic attacks from the neighboring Powhatan natives took a tremendous toll on the population of the settlement and dwindled their population to around 60 people. The Jamestown colony was located near present day James City County, Virginia. Jamestown was the first permanent settlement by the English in what is in current day known as the United States. The location of Jamestown was selected primarily for the fact that it provided a favorable defensive location against any other foreign powers that may have tried to gain control of the colony. John Smith, Robert Hunt along with others provided inspirational leadership for the colonists but even so starvation became a very apparent problem. The hostile relations with the local Native American people and a lack of any profitable exports only made matters worse. Despite this and a horrible winter bearing down on them, the colonists persevered. At the end of the first winter only 60 of the original 214 English colonists survived. (jamestown virginia) The settlers who came over on the initial three ships were not well-equipped for the life they found in Jamestown. In addition to the “Gentry” who was not accustomed to manual or skilled labor, they consisted mainly of English farmers who were not prepared physically or emotionally for the problems that would face them. (old and sold antique digest) Yet despite this they persevered and worked as a team to establish a colony. However, when two ships, crudely constructed in Bermuda, arrived at the settlement with no supplies, when the colonists desperately needed supplies the most, the settlers packed up and abandoned…

According to Edmund S. Morgan, the majority of problems faced by the first settlers who arrived to Jamestown in the year 1607 were caused by the poor organization within the colony. For example, the settlers were unwilling to grow their own food supply and establish a reliable foundation for future settlers. Despite the abundance of game to hunt, and perfect weather conditions to harvest crops, the settlers would instead dig up corpses, and in one case a man killed his wife and ate her in order to survive the starvation. By the year 1610, only 60 settlers had survived. Morgan’s portrayed the settlers as lazy, who were starving by mere choice.…

What I think would have most likely happened in the Roanoke settlement was the settlers died from diseases and famine that started to spread. They weren't prepared for any of these events and they were running low on supplies they needed. They would then be buried and had the word "Croatoan" carved into the tree as paying tribute to their lives in a way. A second possibility is that the settlers decided to move in with the tribe, as the tribe are not hostile and had no hard feelings to them. And the land around them was peaceful and had plenty of natural resources around them to live off of. They would also form an agreement that, in exchange for goods and welfare, they would be welcomed to the tribe. They'd learn about each other's cultures,…

The facts that we, the historians, know so far are that all the colonists, their buildings, and personal possessions disappeared. However, the fences were still up. Secondly, the fact that the whole colony disappeared in just 3 years and never came back to the place where they first settled. Last, but not least, the fact that there was a word “Croatoan,” written on a tree (Wayne McDowell, 2002).…

John White was an artist and a cartographer who traveled from England to the outer banks of North Carolina in 1585. John White was at the Roanoke Island for about thirteen months before returning home to England for more supplies. He made a series of paintings of indigenous people, plants and animals almost over seventy paintings. The purpose of his paintings he thought was to give the people back home an idea of what the new world was like. Despite the significance the watercolor paintings were not published until the twentieth century. Theodore De Bry made engravings on John Whites paintings so they could be printed in Thomas Hariot’s account of the journey.…

In 1584, Walter Raleigh came across Roanoke, which is now a part of North Carolina. Upon arrival, the colonist had a very friendly encounter with the Natives of Roanoke and found them to be very civil people with established villages and agriculturalist, much like the Englishmen. John White painted pictures of the Indians depicting them as “people who lived recognizable civil” which probably came as a surprise to him and the other men. Raleigh and his men returned back to England where he would then get financed to “start commercial farming operations in the New World.” He came back to Roanoke with…

The historical narrative Of Plymouth Plantation by William Bradford tells about the once struggling Pilgrims making a good life for themselves with the help of the Indians. Leaving all civil parts of the world behind the Pilgrims set off. After 66 days aboard the Mayflower they reached Cape Cod on November 11th, 1620. The exhausting expedition brought disease and sickness to the travelers. When they arrived they had no houses, towns or welcoming faces to greet them. The natives to the land seemed unfriendly and carried weapons. That winter Pilgrims stole corn and beans from the Indians. This led to the Pilgrims and Indians first encounter. The Pilgrims shot off their guns which scared the indians away. Later into the winter things didn't look…
