Rite Of Spring Ethnography
The Rite of Spring’s choreography and music combination kept me yearning for more. I most enjoyed the extremely emotional movements because they drew me in and made me ponder the underlying meaning of the dance. This dance was by far the most expressive one presented all semester. The frantic and sudden movements that interchanged with the soft and gentle movements flowed together and portrayed a frantic, yet elegant message. The type of mixed emotional energies and variation of movements is probably what drew the audience in most because of the sudden changes in mood.
This powerful dance had an emotional and primitive theme. The dance most definitely heavily incorporated ballet, however there was a substantial amount of floor work involved

According to historical documents, Guglielmo Ebreo (mid-15th century) was one of the first mentioned dancing masters. The beginning of this type of dance in royal circles paved the path for the birth of ballet. Ladies in long, hoop-skirted dresses danced with male partners in regal coats and knicker-like pants. The movement patterns and footwork were intricate in design.…

One minute it’s upbeat “Spanish” rhythms and the next is slow and steady romantic pieces for the lovers within the drama. By the use of such musical connotations, the overall impact of the ballet is enhanced; so I would venture to say that this is utility music. I can also see the overall ballet as ternary form due to its three major sections. The first section in act one states the thematic material of a conjunct melody yet vivacious rhythmic patterns, connecting me with the carefree and in love feeling evoked. It carried a more elated structure. The second section, on the other hand, relays the contrasting theme of a darker more ambiguous tone. Then returning to the light in the final section restating that thematic material. However during act three, I also felt it had its own quick three part form. When the unwanted finance’s entrance is accompanied with the loud chromatic music and the cuts at the end of pieces causing disjunct melody are acknowledged, a contrast to the thematic material occurs. Though it does quickly returns to the blissful and contented connotation that began this section and all is well in the end. I was unsure of whether or not that was real or if at this point in time I was just searching for something to write in my notes for my…

In the first section started on dark stage, only dancer has a spotlight. Music was soft and smooth. We could hear only piano while dancer was walking forward in straight posture with graceful movement. Started with smooth then mixed up with sharp and pedestrian movements. She uses long white scarf on the floor by showing to us hard work. In dance we say ”low” level. For example, she scrubs the floor, uses as a headband representing to carry something. Emotionally sad ness, she worked hard, she contracts in pain, she flutters her hands like captive birds and she tried to get out of struggling life, but she never gives up. There is pain here as well as power, and the music, so oddly modern to me. In…

I was not familiar with this ballet at all although I have enjoyed Prokofiev’s music when watching Romeo and Juliet. It is not a long piece to watch and the dancing although slow in parts (when the Siren is doing her solo and the Pas de Deux) it is always interesting to watch. The principle male has to really be able to act and portray lots of different emotions – it’s not all about the dancing for this character. I thought for the time it was created quite a contemporary piece which fitted the music.…

The main character of this ballet was a younger woman; I would say around the ages of 15 or 16. Her name was Katherine. I would say that Katherine had an excellent performance and was very entertaining to watch. Like I stated before, I am not a professional dance critique by any means, but I would say that she excelled in all of the topics listed above about things to pay attention to during a dance performance. Katherine made her dancing seem effortless and easy and even made me believe that I could also dance the way she does. I think this is an extremely important quality to have as a performer: to make it look effortless. Along with Katherine’s ability to turn multiple times, she was even able to do it quite rapidly. Katherine did more turns than leaps but when she did the turns, she made it look so easy. She always had a smooth landing and seemed to be made of all limbs; her arms spread wide and open and her toes pointed. In fact, even if she was standing during the scene and not dancing, she was still standing in a first position stance. This made her stand out from the rest of the crowd because no one else did this. She looked very professional. Also,…
