"That $608 is a list price," Bresch said. "What Mylan takes from that, our net sales is $274, so $137 per pen," she said, referring to the fact that EpiPens are sold in packages of two devices.”2 Heather Bresch has the ability to reduce the cost of the EpiPen, rather than offering discounts to eligible families. If the price of the EpiPen is reduced to a reasonable amount, people with inexpensive insurance and no insurance would be able to afford life-saving EpiPens. An idea that came to mind during the writing of the piece was the introduction of a trade-in program that would allow people, who own expired EpiPens, to replace their EpiPens at no cost to them. Understandably, Mylan is a company who needs to make a profit, therefore they have to charge for these products. However, at current prices, only the fortunate and well insured have access to a device that could be the difference between living another day, or dying because of having to choose between the safety of their child and making a mortgage…

Methylphenidate, also commonly known as Ritalin, is classified as a central nervous system stimulant, which is used for the treatment of both attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. This drug works by preventing the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine, which results in the increased activity of these two neurotransmitters within the synaptic space, which occurs by modulating the activity of the dopamine transporter and the norepinephrine transporter. The prefrontal cortex controls all behavior, attention, and emotion but in patients suffering from ADHD symptoms of decreased attention span, heightened distractibility, and poor impulse control are seen. The prefrontal cortex requires norepinephrine and dopamine for…

However, I have heard people claim that Ritalin is overprescribed because "ADHD doesn't exist." These people are flat out wrong. Most mental illnesses and neurological disorders aren't specific things that you can point to, but rather, they're a collection of symptoms that we group together. If someone is diagnosed with ADHD, it's because they exhibit a cluster of behaviors that are classified under a common label.…

Prescription drugs are one of the main increasing costs in health care. It has an impact on the population that could not afford prescription drugs, including brand name. The use of generic and OTC (over-the-counter) drugs gave the underprivileged groups in America a better chance for purchase. People believe that the generic form of the drugs do not have the same effect that brand name drugs do. It is a concern that prescription drug addictions rise in the elderly and the younger groups who use for nonmedical reasons. The availability of drugs is one of the causes of abuse. Most people take medicines only…

Research Question: Why is the abuse of Adderall on the rise with college and high school students? I picked this question because I have been hearing a lot about the rise in popularity of Adderall use among students. I also remembered Officer Rimell talking about it during her drug presentation. I wanted to find out why Adderall is being used, what it is being used for and why it is so popular among students. Imagine being in college, you're stressed beyond anything you can imagine and you need a solution as to how to get all of your work done.…

A problem that affects more than 70% percent of Americans and costs those same Americans over $250 billion annually (Sparks 1). This controversial problem can only be described as the cost of prescription medication. Currently, Americans pay on average $858 annually for prescription medication which is more than 17% percent of total healthcare expenses (Thompson 1). That figure is more than double the average prescription cost across 19 other industrialized countries (Thompson 1). These alarming numbers will also not stop growing, “four of the top ten prescription drugs in the United States have increased in price be more than 100 percent since 2011” (“THE FACTS ABOUT RISING PRESCRIPTION” 2 ). An antimalarial drug was just increased by more than 5,000% from about $13 to $750 (Thompson 2). These rising prices caused more than 35 million Americans to not fill their prescriptions last year (Sanders 1).…
