Ritalin: A Narrative Analysis
Methylphenidate or Ritalin belongs to the family of medications known as stimulants. Ritalin “Works primarily to inhibit the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine, which improves the levels and utility of these neurotransmitters in the brain” (Csiernik, R. 2014). Ritalin is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy (uncontrollable need to sleep). In people with narcolepsy Ritalin stimulates them to prevent the person from falling asleep. With all psychoactive medications there are advantages and disadvantages. Ritalin can improve Anthony’s attention span, impulsivity and decrease his hyperactivity (Csiernik, R. 2014).
