INTRODUCTION

Research In Motion Limited (RIM) is a Canadian telecommunication and wireless equipment company.
Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie are the founders and is headquartered in Waterloo, Canada.

The company is listed on the
NASDAQ stock exchange, USA. and
Toronto Stock Exchange, Canada

Best known as the developer of the BlackBerry smartphone and tablet. Also offers Enterprise and Government Network related services in the form of BlackBerry Enterprise Servers. They are the middleware software packages by Research In Motion (RIM). This software connects the enterprise network for redirecting email, documents, contacts etc. between company servers, desktop workstations, and mobile devices.

PROBLEMS

On October 10, 2011, “RIM experienced one of the worst service outages in the company's history.”

On January 22, 2012 “RIM announced that Co Founders &CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis will step down and announced the new CEO as Thorsten Heins.”

FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE

One of the biggest issues facing RIM and its prospects for success in the future is its financial performance. RIM's revenue and profit figures have slipped constantly.
RIM generated $4.2 billion in revenue and a profit of $329 million in Q1 2011 but its revenue was $4.6 billion and profit $797 million in Q4 2010. In other words, trouble is afoot.

RIM's troubles have been a major issue for shareholders. Over the last years,
RIM's stock value has declined by more than 50 percent as many shareholders lost all faith in the company's ability to turn things around.

SMART PHONE TECHNOLOGY

One of the most surprising things about RIM is its inability to offer a touch screen-based smartphone that can even come close to matching Apple's iPhone.

    BES or the Blackberry encryption server is one of the most effective tools in security with blackberry products. All communications between BES and BlackBerries are encrypted with Triple DES or AES encryption and only the company running the BES instance have the encryption keys. That means that RIM cannot provide these keys to government organizations. This is a great tool for companies who want to be the only ones with the keys to their data. PKI is paramount at this point and the less you have to worry about the better. Most blackberries that are not connected to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, you’re using the BlackBerry Internet Service or BIS. BIS provides the benefits of push-email to the masses. You can organize a riot, or orchestrate assignation, and you don’t even have to be wearing a suit and tie. Instead of connecting to corporate BES, you connect to a BIS server operated by your mobile carrier. This also secures incoming data from anyone not using a blackberry to contact you. This is why most people complain about lag with blackberries. Unlike BlackBerry to BlackBerry communication on BES, BIS email messages are not encrypted before they travel over a mobile carrier’s network. For BIS users, only the mobile carrier’s standard 3G/2G protection applies. Your IT department has the option of encrypting the body — not the PIN — of your PIN-to-PIN BBM messages with a key unique to the company. By default, however, BBM messages are not encrypted…
