1.1 Company Overview:

Reliance Industries Limited, led by its Chairman and Managing Director, Shri Mukesh D. Ambani is India’s largest private sector conglomerate and a Fortune Global 500 company with a sales turnover of US $ 66.8 Billion. It straddles across various sectors like oil & gas, refining, petrochemicals, chemical intermediaries, textiles, retail and telecommunication.

RIL enjoys a pre-eminent position in terms of its contribution to the Indian economy with revenues equal to 2.8% of India’s GDP. It also contributes 14% to India’s total exports and 5.5% to the Government of India’s Indirect tax revenues.

RIL is the largest producer of Polyester fiber and yarn. Its Jamnagar refinery has the largest refining capacity at any single location. The company has fully integrated its oil and gas refining subsidiary, Reliance Petroleum, in an effort to consolidate the company's position as a major player in the global refining business.

1.2 History & Breakthroughs:

Dhirubhai Ambani founded Reliance Commercial Company with a capital of Rs.15000, went on to establish Reliance Textiles in 1964 and finally Reliance Industries Limited in 1970s. RIL is accredited for starting the equity cult in India. More than 58,000 investors from different parts of India subscribed to Reliance's Initial Public Offering made in the year 1977.

Dhirubhai Ambani proved to be a king in his diversification plans into Petro Chemicals, Energy, Power, Refining, Information Technology, Telecommunications, Capital Markets, and Retail etc. Reliance was the first Indian company to successfully tap the Global Depository Receipt (GDR) market in 1992. It is also the only Indian company to raise 50 and 100 year bonds in the U.S. debt markets.

1.3 Business Operations:

Exploration and Production

RIL aims to achieve full potential in domestic oil and gas business through deep-water exploration with a focus on global sourcing and marketing of natural gas in India.

Reliance made the largest Gas discovery in the year 2002 and has since commissioned India's first and one of the World's largest deep water gas production facilities. Currently Reliance is India's largest gas producer. RIL’s domestic oil and gas portfolio consists of 17 exploration blocks excluding KG-D6, CBM, Panna-Mukta and Tapti.

Hence, its oil and gas exploration and production business is extremely critical for India's energy security.

Petroleum refining and marketing

Petroleum Refining and retailing makes RIL the global leader in the core energy value chain. RIL has a crude processing capacity of 1.24 million barrels per day (MBPD), the largest at any single location in the world. RIL refineries are amongst the most complex refineries in the world strategically located to benefit from low transportation costs for their feedstock and its proximity to the high-growth markets of Asia.


Reliance Petroleum offers a vast array of products including bulk fuels, lubricants, spray oils, solvents, dispensing equipment and convenience goods. Its petrochemical plant in Jamnagar produces plastics and fiber intermediates.
