1.1 Overview of the Current State of Technology
With the fast and growing development of systems in the world today, Information Technology (IT) plays an important role especially in the field of business that makes every transaction easier and error-free. By manipulating data, a reliable forecast can be formulated which is of big help to any big business especially those with an online presence. Through the years, the scope of IT has increased exponentially and so thus it’s important to the business sector. Furthermore, today, people want an instant means when it comes to gathering information and researchers.
Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a generic term that is used to describe a system that transmits the identity (in the form of a unique serial number) of an object or person wirelessly, using radio waves. Library is a collection of sources, resources, and services, and the structure in which it is housed; it is organized for use and maintained by a public body, an institution, or a private individual. In the more traditional sense, a library is a collection of books. (wikipedia.org)
A library commonly uses two classification systems: 1) The Dewey Decimal System and 2) The Library of Congress. A traditional conceptual view of the library can be associated with a room full of tall bookshelves and cabinets with cluster of blank forms, and thick labelled folders containing assorted records of library materials, reports, and transactions and with a librarian who facilitates the whole transaction within the library.
The Bulacan Provincial Library (BPL) was established to supplement the needs of the Bulacan constituents and nearby provinces for their researchers and as aid to their education. At the time that the BPL came to existence 50 years ago, books were hard to find and most students could not afford to buy books and other reading materials. It was the time were the conditions that help spawn the revival of the idea of having a public library in the province.
BPL lends book to the public particularly in students besides that the BPL is also participate in organizing conference and seminars workshop. The provincial library is active in the annual commemoration of the national book week, book donation, book shower, and storytelling to aware the public that BPL is always ready to serve in educational needs.
BPL uses manual system for log-in/out of the users and books. They use logbook in recording the details of books and users. Manual system consist of different transactions such borrowing/returning of books, reservation of library materials, and membership/renewal. In borrowing books, user should log-on their name in the logbook and must present the BP library card. And proceed to the shelves where in the books is located, returning of books is the same as in borrowing. BPL provides membership and renewal of library card. User should pay Php30.00 for the application of the library card to the cashier located at the ground floor of the Provincial Capitol. Submit the requirements needed to have library card such as receipts, 1x1 picture (2pcs), and Xerox copy of receipts (BPC students) and get the validated library card after 3 days at the librarian and it is good for 6months. For the renewal of the library card, user will only pay Php15.00. BPL use E-library for six years. E-library provides online searching within different universities and libraries in the Philippines. E-library needs internet connection to search books and it cost Php15.00 per hour. Using manual system is prone in errors, difficulty in report generations, maintenance, filling of records, and updating user and books information.
