REWARDING WORK
So much of our time is spent trying to discover who we are and where we stand in life. Many of us blindly go into our college years without knowing what we will take up or what our career paths will be. Going to college straight out of high school was something that I knew I was not ready for. After I graduated high school I knew I was interested in doing a lot in life but didn’t know what. I waited many years before I decided to enter into my college years. As a grown woman, it was ever more difficult for me to decide on what I wanted to do with my life. After a lot of thought and consideration I decided that I wanted to go into the IT field. My journey would then begin into a field that I knew very little about but was interested anyway.
Once I finally decided that I wanted a career in the IT field, I had to take careful consideration in how the field was growing. I knew that IT was a very profitable career field but I didn’t know how much of a career it would have been for me. I researched the degree program with two particular schools I was interested in as well did some internet research on the field. I realized that I had to specialize in something specific in the field. IT is a very promising field but it will be more beneficial with a concentration such as cyber security of homeland security. Once I researched it I began to do a study on the different places I would be able to work in. Since I have spent over 13 years in DOD (Department of Defense), I wanted to remain in a government or private sector as an IT specialist. I researched the FBI and Department of Homeland Security for job opportunities. I would further my opportunities by getting a certificate in project management. My job as a logistician in the army already gives me minor head start as a project manager but I did not know how to connect that with the IT career goal I wanted to pursue. After more research and speaking with some people that I knew in the field, I came to the

When I graduated high school in 2013 I attended a community college in Pennsylvania for a semester. My thought on college in high school were “I don’t really want to continue my education for another four years”. That was until my high school counselor called me to her office seeing that I didn’t apply for schools. She explained that I wouldn’t be able to get a good job or ever own a house without a college degree, so that fear pushed me into continuing my education. My parents were the same way they also told me “most jobs would hire a college graduate over a high school graduate”. That was the final push towards the path of…

A wise person once told me to “find a career and I will never be without a job.” I took that statement and ran with it! My freshman year everyone was motivating and questioning me on my future and what I wanted to do with. It started off as a counselor until I realized I do not necessarily BASK listening to INCONSOLABLE stories all day! Next it was a meteorologist, but can’t we look outside and see that it's raining? Then it was a teacher, and for that one let's just everything isn't for everybody! I found myself becoming BEWILDERED and feeling DESOLATED because I had peeked my junior year; the year where everything is supposed to be VAST and ready to go, and I was still AMBIVALENT on what I wanted “in the real world” as I heard in the many EXPOUNDING lectures. It was not until the summer of my senior year that God had finally put it in my heart to become a Pediatric Nurse Advisor; to become this person that can ASSUAGE and ABATE people, to become the…

Since birth they’ve known they wanted to be a teacher, businessmen or women, lawyers, etc. However amongst those overly prepared students there is another population that quite honestly has no idea as to what their profession will be. Throughout my collegiate career I would have considered myself part of the students that had their ten-year plan figured out, but realistically I wasn’t.…

Throughout my time in high school I had never really given much thought into what I wanted to do once I graduated. I knew I was going to be going to some university to pursue a degree, but I didn’t know what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go. It wasn’t until I took AP Computer Science in 11th grade that I decided that pursing a degree in Computer Science was the right thing for me. This type of work was something that I greatly enjoyed and through computer science I would be able to solve problems in creative ways. When applying for colleges I didn’t get into the University of Florida. This was my top pick and for months I was looking forward to the possibility of attending there. I didn’t let that get me down because I still had plenty…

I found dreams I never knew I would want to accomplish so desperately, which is another reason I started taking college classes my senior year through a running start program. I have found myself valuing all of my work and dedication much more, because being independent has definitely been a beautiful episode that forced me to be an adult. I see myself going to a four-year school and find a job where i can operate with kids and people facing struggles. I love sociology and have always thought of myself working to help others. I have started a new passion towards history and society change over time which has made me strongly perplexed about a career choice. Due to my indecisiveness, I continue to take as many classes as I can, to clarify my decisions, and hope to find a perfect career for…

For myself choosing a major was a thought I was unsure of. When I was a junior in High School teachers, classmates and family would constantly ask “what is your major in college going to be?” my answer for a long time was ‘I have some time to think about it, I’m torn between a couple majors, or I might even take a semester off to think about it”, however I had no clue. Because I wasn’t sure I figured applying to any UC’s and CSU’s would be waste of time, I didn’t want to rush and pick something because I had to, so I decided my best option was to attend COM and really explore my options. A year later, after two semesters at COM I found myself still trying to figure out my major. I was unsure for a long time, it wasn’t until the day my older sister went into labor with my nephew that her nurse made me realize what she did for my sister was something I wanted to do for women everyday. What I experienced in the labor room the day of my nephews birth forever changed my life. Helping my sister through her labor was meaningful to me because it made me realize how calm I could stay during a stressful time, her work ethic, and realizing I wanted to go into nursing.…

I have always had a passion for learning, but for most of my life that passion was fulfilled by educating myself. Either by reading fieroucously about a subject on my own or jumping in with two feet and learning something new. After spending nearly a decade working in and around technology, I realized something was missing. I had hit a ceiling, I knew there was more to know, more that I could learn. I wanted to take my hobby, and turn it into a career. A career that could blend together my passion for technology, and my skills in customer service and communication. It was then that I decided to pursue a degree in Information Technology. When I decided it was time to go to school, I went looking for someplace local, that I could work at a steady pace towards my goals and still work a full time job. This led me to Pioneer Pacific. I received an associate’s degree in Information Technology, which I had already planned to continue thru to a Bachelor’s degree, but between my underclassmen classes and moving on to the second half of my Bachelor’s degree I went forward with obtaining a second associates degree in Web Design. I am glad I made that decision, it helped introduce me to other programing languages and helped guide me towards my favorite aspects of programming.…

I just want to start off by saying that I am truly blessed to be able to have the opportunity that so many don't have: getting an education. I dreamed I would always be able to learn to be able to do a little of everything no matter what it was: either it was learning culinary, mechanics, science, mathematics, history, etc. I’ve just wanted to be that one person who knows a little of everything; no matter what the skill was I could do it. It may sound impossible but "nothings impossible." As I enter the college life, this is where I will be determining my dream and where I truly will belong for the rest of my life it may take a while but that’s what college is for to really test the waters and become comfortable with the one that occupation that really fits me well. I think what I really want to achieve in college is to be a role model; to be the role model that I want to be responsible by being able to balance my school, work, and social life, but most importantly I want to be able to make my family proud and support them like they did for me.…
