Analyze the causes of the problem with understaffing at the Online University. In reading the cause of the issue, it is clear that the university did not hire someone who was qualified to handle a leadership position. Being a leader is so much more than demanding someone to complete task but it is about communicating effectively and making sure that everyone is a team player. As we see, there was no team playing going on with the university. It is a major problem when someone who is appointed the leader is not capable or willing to do their job properly because then it makes it hard for those working under he/she at the university. By being understaffed, the university is not able to function as they should because they do not have the right individuals to cover all the tasks that are needed. With any job, there are individuals appointed to different departments in which they are qualified to work on. When there is no one able to work in that department, it either gets shut down or they find someone who has similar qualifications until they are able to find an individual. What does this mean? This means that the individual is going to have more than one job performance and only receive the pay for whichever position they were working for beforehand. The university is trying to continue to function but without the proper staff, it does make things hard for them to do and even though it is online, there are still individuals who need to have student support and other things that a university gives. Without having these functions, the university can lose students and money which is going to put them at a financial risk. Sometimes if the financial responsibility is not met through the school then they can lose their accreditation and they will either have to close or find another way to function. 2.
Discuss the importance of a compatible leadership style to motivate and manage a volunteer staff. A leader is defined as “the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country”. Looking at the definition of leadership we see that it is a huge task to complete but it is not for everyone to hold. Being a compatible leader is very important when working in any field. To be a compatible leader, one has to be able to show empathy, determination, be stern and a host of other qualifications that will uphold them in the leadership position. When thinking about being a leader dealing with individuals who are volunteering, it is important to understand their positions. Volunteers are different than actual employees so they in all honesty “do not have to deal with unnecessary foolishness” from someone who does not know how to do their job. In order to motivate volunteers they have to be able to see that the individual leading them is capable and able to do the job that they have been assigned, especially with being in a leadership position. It is important for leaders to understand that they should know how to approach all situations no matter what it is because if it is not handled properly then the end result will be as we are seeing now which is an understaffed university. There are many issues that come into play and one of the things that should be recognized is the fact that leaders are not in my opinion made but they are born. You can teach someone things that consist of being a leader but that does not make them a leader at all and they have to have those qualities and sometimes it is important to bring them out but one cannot be taught how to be a leader if they are not born to be one. Often times individuals try to put themselves in a leadership position when it was not called for them to be in one and this is going to cause chaos. Motivating individuals is not hard to do but when one does not know how to approach someone or deal with an individual then motivation can be hard.
