Review of the Omnivore’s Dilemma: Part 1

Chapters one through three of Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma contains a plethora of information. It starts with background information of how we came to know corn, followed by activities of an American Farm, and the government which influences it. Part One envelopes a captivating informative history with descriptive qualities, while could improve on source information. Chapter one takes you right into reality and familiarity of a supermarket and then asks the questions of how it came to be. When the question is posed, the answer leads right back to the same basic plant, corn. In chapter two, Pollan introduces Mr. Naylor a man in Iowa who describes his experiences as a farmer. It also introduces the government influence that makes us dependable on corn, and flows into the trouble that we go through to grow this surplus of corn. The expansive history of corn and how it has evolved from essentially an accident is fascinating. Between the Mayans’ interactions and praise to the Africans’ desire to trade slaves with it like gold; it paints a multidimensional picture of the history of corn. Pollan does a nice job of putting you in the moment by being descriptive in his writing. In the grocery store you can hear the lights humming, the sprinklers turning on, and the smell of fresh meat. You walk into a normal everyday experience that most anyone can relate to. He uses similes to describe the process of a planter plowing the field, “is like trying to steer a boat through a softly rolling sea of dark chocolate.” (pg. 32) A vision of rolling hills becomes clear, with dark rich soils. He introduces new terms to describe silos as an office building. This is much a comparison to the logistics of an office building giving support to a company these silos give support to the American food chain.
