REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

According to antiessays.com, Gender discrimination basically means how certain people are treated differently in their place of employment. If you have been rejected for employment, fired, or treated unfairly in employment because of your sex, then you have suffered from gender discrimination. Throughout most of history, women have been an underdog in many areas of the society regardless of the amount of education or experience they’ve had. In many top positions within companies, you often see more men in superior positions as opposed and women generally have had fewer rights and career opportunities than men. The attitude towards women has not only been considered intellectually inferior to men, but looked upon as a household figure as well. Despite its admirable march towards women’s rights and advancements, the society still needs to go a long way in terms of integrating women in the workplace putting aside gender roles, social norms and discrimination.

Furthermore, buzzlebee.com states that efficiency of women to succeed professionally has been acknowledged all over the world. Nevertheless gender discrimination in the workplace did exist and still continues in one form or the other. With better educational opportunities more and more women are opting for financial independence by working towards a stable career. Today almost every field that was earlier touted as being men-only has been pervaded by women. If a woman qualifies on the basis of all the requirements of a profession, then there is no reason why there should be gender discrimination at the workplace. Although laws have been passed in most countries to provide equal opportunities at the workplace for both men and women, the fact is that 'women and the glass ceiling' still exists. In the subtle comments that make your way, in a way that your being a woman or a man is considered a hurdle in your career growth, in the way that a certain task always comes your way because of your gender; or in the way that it is taken for granted that you cannot handle a particular task cause you're a woman or a man. It has been tough for women to break away from their traditional roles as homemakers and make a mark for themselves as career oriented women, those who are capable of handling the work force as well. While it has been tough for them to break away, it has been even tougher

for their male counterparts to accept them as individuals, capable of working alongside them and reaping the same benefits. So the trend that has been seen is that of women becoming victims of sexism and having to deal with its effects.

    Women have experienced a historic situation of inequality in the social as well as professional aspects. Women are normally the ones that would take care of the children, do the household chores, and in rural areas; they would work in the field with the rest of the family.
