Shakespeare crafts the play so Laertes can have an illogical need and desire for revenge. Laertes is determined to make Hamlet pay: “I am satisfied in nature, / Whose motive in this case should stir me most / To my revenge". Laertes’s need for revenge indicates his desire for closure and his wish to find inner peace. Laertes believes that the solace he desires will come through revenge: "But in my terms of honor / I stand aloof, and will no reconcilement / Till by some elder masters of known honor / I have a voice and precedent of peace.” Again, this demonstrates the need for closure and shows the reasoning behind Laertes’s thirst for justice, reinforcing Shakespeare’s theme of…

In Shakespear’s Hamlet, a theme of revenge is shown throughout the play in which each character seeks out differently. The two polar opposites being Prince Hamlet and Prince Fortinbras are often discussed due to their different methods of action or in Hamlet’s case, no action. Assuming one has read the play, in the end, we are left with Hamlet’s dying wish for Fortinbras to be King. Because there is not anyone left to take the throne, the audience is expected to accept the fact that Fortinbras will be king and everything will be okay. The play has no conclusion; therefore, the future of Denmark is left to the audience’s imagination. The simplest argument is that because Fortinbras is a man of action, one assumes he will make a great king despite…

Laertes, in a parallel revenge, seeks revenge against Hamlet for killing his father, Polonius, and the early death of his sister Ophelia. Claudius agrees that Laertes deserves to be revenged upon Hamlet, since Hamlet’s erratic behavior has made him a threat to Claudius’s reign. The king speculates that if Hamlet could be tempted into a duel with Laertes, it might provide Laertes with the chance to kill him. Laertes agrees, and they settle on a plan. Laertes will use a sharpened sword rather than the customary dull fencing blade. Laertes also proposes to poison his sword, so that even a scratch from it will kill Hamlet. Hamlet does die, but not before Laertes, so Laertes never does get his revenge against Hamlet.…

That said, it is difficult to condemn Hamlet’s longing for revenge. In the recent times, if someone murders your father, one may count on the justice system to take revenge on their behalf. It may not, however, feel as good as compared to taking revenge yourself, but it is legal. (Shakespeare, 1878). For Hamlet, yet, there was no other way to get justice, or indeed revenge for the murder of his father by Claudius, the most powerful man in the kingdom. In such a case, the personal attack…

After witnessing the death of his mother and Laertes confessing to Hamlet about what Claudius has done, ‘The King, the King’s to blame.’ Hamlet wastes no time in avenging his mother as he forces Claudius to finish the poison, ‘Here, thou incestuous, murderous, damnéd Dane, Drink off the potion.’ This also could suggest that Hamlet’s previous delays in enacting his revenge were based only on non-conclusive evidence which in such a mind as Hamlets could very easily have manifested itself into doubt about what he had to do. But finally having conclusive concrete evidence of Claudius Hamlet does not delay in slaying…

Over the centuries, many great authors have come and gone, leaving behind timeless writing. Out of all, however, Shakespeare may be the most well known and revered author, with popular writings such as Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and the infamous tragedy Hamlet. Hamlet is as timeless as it is profound, and is, to this day, one of the most widely read pieces of literature. Hamlet’s messages of loyalty, revenge, and corruption still apply to present day situations, and give readers insight into Hamlet’s views on the world, and himself.…

One example of a character in Hamlet that seeks revenge from an unjust act is Hamlet himself. After Hamlets father’s death, his mother marries Hamlets uncle Polonius. Hamlet is appalled by this since his father didn’t even pass two months before the wedding. While hamlet is stuck in grief about his father’s death and his mother’s marriage, his is visited by the ghost of his father and is told Polonius murdered him and “cut off even in the blossoms of my sin, unhousel’d disappointed, unaneled; no reckoning made, but sent to my account with all my imperfections on my head.” (1.5.77). Because of this Sir Hamlet tells Hamlet to take revenge on his uncle and Hamlet agrees too. Throughout the play Hamlet plans out to kill Polonius and when he has his first chance to take revenge he notices he is praying and backs down since “now I’ll do’t: and so he goes to heaven:” (3.3.75) He didn’t want his uncle not to suffer, he needed to take revenge when his sins aren’t forgiven so he can suffer like his father has. At the end of the play Hamlet finally gets his revenge. After figuring out that Polonius is trying to poison him and accidently poisons the Queen, Hamlet stabs him with the poisoned…
