It is important to recognize that the process of delegation is delicate. It is not easy for a supervisor to part with some authority and still be left with the responsibility for the workers’ performance. The supervisor must achieve a balance among too much, too little, and just the right amount to delegate without losing control. In some situations, supervisors must resort to their formal authority to attain the objectives of the department or pro-vide direction to employees who require close supervision. Supervisors at times have to make decisions that are distasteful to employees. Delegation does not mean a supervisor should manage a department by consensus or by taking a vote on every issue. The next behavior discussed deals with specifying the employee’s range of discretion. Adept managers realize that delegation should occur openly and specifically. Ricky Lee’s task as the delegator is effective because he first asked his manager Anne Zumwalt if delegation would be possible to assign the rewriting of the procedures manual to Bill Harmon instead of handing off responsibilities secretly. Setting up a meeting with Bill Harmon will allow the two to set expectations and parameters for the project. It is also necessary for Ricky Lee to let other employees know what Bill Harmon is responsible, in case other tasks he may be working on are delayed or must be assigned to others on the team. The key factor in this behavior is communication.…

Being the manager usually means that more expertise is involved and a greater level of knowledge than subordinates. Delegating tasks is important not as an offload of those that are undesirable but those that will allow for a more effective use of time. There are a number of assignments that can be easily delegated such as those that are repetitive, routine, require certain skills, and/or more suitable for another team member. Delegation also helps to improve the performance of subordinates while at the same time freeing up time for managerial tasks that are unable to be passed down the chain of command. By leading and controlling the assignment of new tasks or those of which the employee is inexperienced at performing through supervision and…

Delegation is the assignment of authority and responsibility to a subordinate at a lower level (Brasfield, pg246). Delegation is widely acknowledged to be an essential element of effective management (Yukl, G. 1994). Delegation is basically a process of assigning responsibility, sharing authority, and producing accountability in organizations.
