Clan Systems, Residential Schools and European Contact

Family Life Prior to European Contact
The clan systems operated at the government of the community, worked out methods of organizing daily tasks for individuals within the community. The clan systems were built on equality and guided and reinforced the teachings of living a good life. The hoof clan members were the social workers of the community and provided care and protection for the vulnerable members of the community. The hoof clan was responsible for making decisions for the safety of the community.
The community was interconnected to each other and the land in their nomadic lifestyle as well as a concern for sustaining the land and ensuring that the resources were available for next generations. Tribes followed the seasons and went where food was available at a certain time of year. This lifestyle allowed time for the earth to replenish what resources were used by the communities. Two gifts from the toddler stage of life are laughter and learning from mistakes. These gifts contribute to family wellbeing by enabling the family to embrace the joy of living. Two gifts of the young adult stage of life are independence and settling into an individual’s own role into the community. These gifts contribute to family wellbeing by providing information and support while the young adult finds their place.
European Contact: Catalysts of change to the Family System
The European policies that affected family life and created challenges for Aboriginal families include enfranchisement which is the loss of status, either by choice (a move from the reservation), or marriage (a Native woman lost status if she married a white man) and legislation that was passed to prevent Native peoples from purchasing farm equipment with bank loans. This made family life harder because it promoted the cycle of poverty on the

    This resilient value of family is the foundation of the kinship bond between the Navajo. They are a people that love their homeland and are spiritual connected to it. The Navajo Nation is one of the largest tribes in the United States, and the Navajo reservation encompasses over 16 million acres (Davina, R. T. B. 2006). As for kinship, the Navajos are a matrilineal society, where property, status, etc. are inherited through women. The Navajo people have a kinship system that follows the lineage of women (Carey, 2013). Women either bring a clan name with them, or are assigned a clan on acceptance into the tribe. Some come from existing clans of other tribes, while others may be created out of circumstance. The Diné society is based primarily upon kinship arising from clan affiliation, as each person is a member of the tribe by reason of his or her affiliation to one of the numerous clans (Carey, 2013). Each Navajo belongs to four different, unrelated clans. He or she belongs to his or her mother’s clan. He or she is born from his or her father’s clan. He or she has maternal and paternal grandfather’s clans. Traditionally, the people were forbidden to marry into the first two clans; today they are still strongly discouraged from doing so. The Navajo people are always living among relatives. This is an essential element that bonds this pastoral culture. Caring for and raising animals is a fundamental part of the culture. Younger family members learn the pastoral ways from grandparents, mothers and fathers. Even today, many Navajo children raised on the reservation continue to herd sheep and livestock.     Children always have a “play time” or stuff to play with. If children don’t have these things, then did you have a childhood? Older boys in the Ojibwa tribe were interested in lacrosse. They played when they could. But, as a child gets older, it has responsibilities. These children, depending on their clan, had tasks everyday to tend to. There were seven clans and each clan had to take part in giving something to the whole society or tribe.
