Residency IPPE Personal Statement
After completing the pharmacy residency IPPE, I feel like I have a much better understanding of how residency training is structured and how it can benefit me as a pharmacist. Visiting the hospital was helpful because it allowed us to talk with a variety of both PGY1 and PGY2 residents about not only the academic aspects of residency but also the more practical concerns such as finances and family balance. I felt that these conversations were both enlightening and comforting. After this experience and the conversations with the residents, I am very likely to complete a residency after graduation. I have been considering the possibility of completing at least a PGY1 residency since before entering pharmacy school. After studying for a year I have become interested in pursuing psychiatric pharmacy. This interest was fueled even more during this IPPE when I was able to shadow in the inpatient psychiatric unit. After graduation I would like to pursue this by participating in a PGY1 residency, and using at least one of my elective rotations to further explore psychiatric pharmacy. After PGY1, assuming that I am still interested in psychiatric …show more content…
Being able to take on a variety of rotations successfully while working on other projects assures employers that you can pick up on whatever specific information is necessary to perform a job well. Also being trained to learn quickly is an appealing quality in an employee. More importantly residency provides a way to gain specialized experience in a practice area under the supervision of a mentor so that when an employer hires me, they know that I have at least some experience and won’t be overwhelmed by the demands of the job. Overall, I think the residency experience is very marketable, and puts pharmacists on a fast track to being exceptional

When my grand-uncle died, hundreds of people came to his funeral. Many were former patients; they spoke of how gracious my grand-uncle was. He changed the lives of many people by caring for those who could not afford healthcare. Before I die, I want to better the lives of as many people possible by developing cheap and accessible treatments. HLI’s Student Week provides the chance to utilize theoretical knowledge from scientific articles, AP sciences, and independent studies in practical application. Since the field I am passionate about pursuing is pathology, HLI’s focus on life sciences at a molecular level would be the most beneficial program for me as I would be learning how medical professionals research in a laboratory. From the skills…

A year and two pre-pharmacy semesters after my injury, I returned to a hospital, this time as a volunteer. Though no pharmacy positions were available, I volunteered close to 100 hours in Hartford Hospital's Surgical Family Lounge. My task involved communicating with physicians and nurses to provide updates for families regarding the status of their loved ones. My time at the hospital grew to be a fruitful learning experience about teamwork. The numerous tasks and busy environment of the hospital made it imperative to work well with staff. During one chaotic summer day, joint effort with one additional volunteer substantially improved the efficiency of the whole process. With time I expanded my communication skills as well, as I mastered the ability to relay messages. I had to translate complex medical terminology into layman terms for the families. This allowed me to develop communication skills and expand upon my medical vocabulary, which would unquestionably prove useful in pharmacy. While I have improved my teamwork and communication abilities in the hospital, I look forward to the opportunity for further development of these and other valuable skills throughout pharmacy school.…
