Identify the skills you’ve learned this week. How could each of these apply to your academic work? How could each of these apply to your professional work? The skills that I’ve learned this week are the steps to active reading, vocabulary strategies, how to read different kinds of textbooks, and how to improve my reading. Active reading and improving my reading work hand in hand. In reference to my academic work, these skills can help increase my focus and concentration and help promote a better understanding of what I am reading. Learning how to read different textbooks helps me to distinguish between the types and how to go about understanding them. In my professional work, all these skills help prepare me to be able to compose and understand resumes, company letters, and business proposals.…

Registering Births, Deaths and Marriages requires use of all the functional skills so it is vitally important for me as the tutor to embed these within the teaching session. During my micro teach session I used a variety of methods to introduce different functional skills to the learners. For example, I spoke about the history of registration and how a fine of £2 was introduced in 1875 for people who didn’t register their children’s births. As the annual salary was about £40 per year it gave the students an idea of what proportion of their salary the fine was.…

My experience shows that this is far from the case. Having looked at some of the lessons being delivered by my fellow DTTLS students I have found examples of Functional Skills in all of them. The “trick” is to recognise and develop them once found and put appropriate assessment tools in place to prove learning and…

The specialist area within which I work is delivering Key and Functional Skills. Therefore, the main focus is on English and maths. The challenge I have is less about embedding Functional Skills, and more about encouraging learners to apply the skills they are learning within life, learning and work. The learners I work with are those who did not achieve grade C or above in their GCSE English and or maths, and many of them struggle with these subjects due to a lack of interest or due to low ability. Therefore, the challenge for me is to teach the skills they need in a way that is interesting and meaningful, so that they are able to learn and retain the skills and apply them beneficially.…

These are the identified basic or core skills that a student would need to be able to understand and complete an area of study, and the Government has identified these as English language use (literacy and spoken word), information communication technology (ICT) and numeracy. All subject areas are now required to offer embedding of these Skills within their courses, and I have set out three examples in the field of drama and performing arts:…
