C.I.: The pros and cons of legalizing medical marijuana are widely discussed. In my speech I am going to talk about both the pros and the cons of legalizing medical marijuana, as well as discuss the states that have legalized medical marijuana already. Lastly, I would like to discuss where Illinois is with the legalization of medical marijuana.

I. What is medical marijuana?

A. By definition (, Illinois Department of Public Health), marijuana refers to the dried flowers, leaves, stems and seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant. All forms of marijuana technically can be considered as medical marijuana.

1. References to the medical use of marijuana can be found in some of the earliest recorded histories. 2. The Cannabis sativa plant contains all the compounds that produce mind-altering effects when smoked or ingested. Researchers have been evaluating what medical benefits these effects could have in controlling symptoms of certain medical conditions.

B.Medical marijuana is known to have the ability to provide relief from pain, lack of appetite, mood, nausea and vomiting, memory and motor functions (Prozialeck). C.Medical marijuana is used as a viable treatment for many diseases such as cancer, glaucoma, Aids, Alzheimer’s disease, Chrohn’s disease, severe fibromyalgia and many others (Volkow).
