BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
In this study the effects of appraisals within Ghacem will be investigated. The most important factor that will be looked into while analyzing the affects of appraisals will be if they have a considerable impact in terms of adding value to the overall success of the organization with regards to the employees within Ghacem.

The key uses of appraisal system at workplace are to weigh up decision and develop decision. And it is also an instrument to give confidence and praised strong performer to continue their outstanding performance and motivate poor performer to do better job at workplace. Overall it is an opportunity for employees to improve their working lives. It gives chance to employees to meet high level management in organization to discuss their experiences and provides better chance of self evaluation in which area they need to cover by training and development. Performance appraisal is also a technique for employers to protect themselves against favoritism claims and distribute awards fairly.

BRIEF HISTORY OF GHACEM
Ghacem was founded by the Government of Ghana in collaboration with Norcem AS of Norway on August 30, 1967. In 1993, the Ghana Government sold 35 % of its shares to Scancem (formerly Norcem). Scancem as a result had 59.5 %, leaving it with 40 % and 0.5 % going to a local investor. In 1997, the Ghana Government sold 5 % of its 40 % shareholding to the workers of the company.

The remaining 35 % shares of the Ghana Government was sold to Scancem in 1999 and at present Scancem has 93.1 % shares in the company, Ghana Government have 5 % shares and 1.9 % is owned by Dr. J. A. Addison, a local investor. In 1999, HeidelbergCement took over Scancem, thus making it a subsidiary. Ghacem factories in Tema and Takoradi, have produced over 30 million tonnes of cement since inception in 1967.
