THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Communication is the exchange of symbols, common messages and information. It is a process of exchange between individuals through a common system of symbols; the art of expressing ideas and the science of transmitting information. This study definition makes us understand that communication is both an art and a science. Communication is correlated with the ability of a learner in speaking, writing, reading and listening. This paper deals with the ideas of communication competence, and how we describe it. Communication competence is very essential to the basic education, for it serves in the improvement of the learner’s ability to understand and use language appropriately to communicate in authentic social and school environments. It tells also that if the communication competence of the learner is better, he or she has an excellent performance in school while the student or learners who has a poor communication competence, he or she has a unproductive performance or failed.
Along this line, the study will seek to find out the relation of the communication competence to the academic performance of the teacher education students.
Statement of the Problem
Generally, this study aimed to identify the level of communication competence among teacher education students and its relation to the academic performance.
Specifically, the study intends to answer the following:
1. What is the impact of communicative competence to the academic performance of the students? 2. What are the problems encountered by the students in term of their communication system? 3. What are the reasons why the students have problems in term of the communication system? 4. Is there significant relationship between communication competence and academic performance?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will be conducted to know the relationship between the communication competence and the academic performance of the teacher education students. The study confines itself only to the 50 students (Major in English) of the teacher education department who are officially enrolled in the First semester, Academic year 2014-2015.
Only 25 students were involved as respondents. Only those types of communication competencies applicable to classroom setting were included in the items of the questionnaire. These were diction and pronunciation for the verbal competence. Under diction, appropriateness of words, vocabulary and grammar were also considered.
In this study, it employs descriptive-correlational statistics to analyze the data gathered. The sampling technique that will be used is stratified random sampling to identify the representation. The information that will be gathered through survey, in order to bring out the solution to the specific problem. In gathering data it will impart the different outlook of the respondents.
