RESEARCH PLAN Materials development and properties The Master’s degree programme in Materials Science and Engineering provides expertise in areas important around the world as an industrial nation, both today and in the future. Since Materials Science and Engineering is interdisciplinary, we must have solid basis in mathematics, physics and chemistry. At the same time, we need to understand how the materials are produced, how they function, which properties they have and how they are shaped and used. As a Materials Science and Engineering graduate we should have gained the necessary skills in the use of scientific methods to solve major industrial and research projects within our subject area. Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary study programme, ranging from the production of aluminum, steel and silicon to the development of new materials for energy production and hydrogen storage. My research plan is about material development that which kind of materials a car, a boat, an aeroplane or an offsore installation are are made of, have we wondered about this? Why exactly that material is used, what material properties that are important, and finally what determines the property of the material? This requires a basic knowledge of how nano- and microstructures affect the utilisation potential of materials. As a tool for structure characterisation advanced electron microscopes with a resolution all the way down to atomic level are used. So we can create the aluminum cars of the future, or form the basis for safe and environmentally friendly utilisation of the oil and gas resources. The metals can be produced in many different ways, either from natural raw materials, or by recycling scrap metal? Aluminium and steel are examples of materials that to an increasing degree is recycled so we can produce the future car of aluminium and achieve a great place in the research field of Material Science and
