Since I was in school I've heard something and then later I learned what it was. This happened mostly during middle school and now sometimes in my high school. It's not just the word wetback that's insulting, other words too like illegal, Alien, poor, sp** and other offensive language. I don't get called that stuff that much anymore, but when I do it really bothers me. The dictionary defines the word “wetback” as a Mexican living in the US without official authorization.” (Oxford Dictionary).” The connotation of wetback really only has a main meaning. But most Mexicans don't get offended by the word, most mexicans call them self “mojados,” which is the same thing as wetbacks. When it truly hits them is when a non-latino uses the word. (Article.latimes.com) This sort of language is insulting a race and we have to understand what's appropriate and know what you're truly saying. …show more content…
But that word has developed over the many, many years it's been around in this country. On May 1954 there was an operation wetback, created by Joseph Swing, the director of of the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service. The program was run by General Herbert Brownell they had special tactics to deal with with illegal border crossings by Mexican Nationalists in the US. It originated by Mexican government requesting the operation to stop the entry of illegals. Only time they were allowed to enter was in seasonal labor work controlled by the Bracero Program during WWII by a agreement of both Mexican and US governments. But it went overhand and people were getting arrested and deported without haven't a chance to prove their citizenship, Which its civil right violation, things that are happening
