Fox take pride in making their practice metal-free when it comes to fillings. The main reason that we reject using metal fillings, specifically amalgam fillings, is because they contain materials, such as mercury, that can be harmful. We also offer only metal-free fillings because amalgam fillings have been surpassed technologically. They have been used for approximately 150 years to fill teeth and at Fox Family Dentistry, we think that you shouldn’t be able to easily see fillings when they are placed in your teeth. This is a downside to amalgam fillings: you can see the metal within the filled teeth, which can affect the appearance of the teeth.

In going away from amalgam fillings, we discovered that the best option for you is composite tooth-colored fillings. Not only are they an excellent choice for people who want their fillings to look like their natural teeth, but they can also withstand the pressure that is applied when biting down on food. If you want to maintain your bright, white smile but need to have a cavity repaired either in the front of your mouth or the back, a composite tooth-colored filling will almost always be your most logical choice.

Dental implants are the best restorative treatment for missing teeth because they are a long term solution. According to Dr. Guy M. Lewis in his article he states, “When properly maintained with adequate brushing and flossing, the implant itself can last a lifetime” (“Love That Smile” par. 3). Implants are used to replace one or extra missing teeth, and if they are taken care of the right way, they are guaranteed to last a lifetime. If the implant is well taken care of and treated as if it was a real tooth, it will be in the best condition possible and last the patient a lifetime. The full idea of a dental implant is to look compared, feel like and act related to a real tooth. It is only right to treat the implant as if it was a real tooth…

Dental (silver) amalgam has been used in various dental applications for more than a century. In fact, the first written record of amalgam being used in dental applications is 1528 .Yet, it is still a very commonly used material today. Amalgam was first made by melting down Spanish or Mexican coins and mixing them with mercury . When it cooled and settled into the cavity, it actually turned black. Bell then evolved this rudimentary procedure into a more controlled alloy in 1819. The substance created a massive wealth for the dental surgeons who promoted its use. However, the substance was actually overused, and in 1845 a convention of dental surgeons agreed to stop its use altogether. They believe that the substance was ineffective, but in actuality it was just overused in situations that it was not designed for. In 1850 it was realized that the substance was irreplaceable and was allowed back…

In 1809, J. Maggiolo inserted a gold implant tube into a fresh extraction socket which was allowed to heal and later a crown was added. But unfortunately, there was extensive inflammation of the gingiva which followed the procedure. Innumerable substances during this time period were used as implants; these included silver capsules, corrugated porcelain, and iridium tubes.13,14 Dr. EJ Greenfield15, in 1913, placed a “24-gauge hollow latticed cylinder of iridio-platinum soldered with 24-karat gold” as an artificial root to “fit exactly the circular incision made for it in the jaw-bone of the patient”. In the 1930’s, two brothers, Dr. Alvin and Dr. Moses Strock, experimented with orthopedic screw fixtures made of Vitallium (chromium-cobalt alloy). They carefully observed how physicians successfully placed implants in the hip bone, so they implanted them in both humans and dogs to restore…
