Slaves were sold by auction to the person that bid the most money for them. When a slave ship was due to arrive, slave auctions were advertised. After arriving, the slaves were taken off the ship, washed and covered with grease, in order to look healthier. Also, using a hot iron they were branded as slaves. The trades were using these tricks in order to gain as much money as possible. Before the bidding, the buyers were able to look at the slaves closely. Each slave was given a starting price, and potential buyers would bid against each other by giving higher prices. The buyer bidding the highest price would become the owner of that slave.
