Research Paper On Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that conducts research and gives advice on contraception, family planning, and reproductive problems. As stated on the Planned Parenthood website, “There are over 650 centers throughout the United States” (Planned Parenthood). In recent months, the debate on whether the funds for the organization should be cut has been astronomical. Just like any other public issue, people support both sides of the debate. The defunding of Planned Parenthood should be blocked because it offers multiple medical services like contraception, cancer screenings, and STD testing.

Abortion is one of the most talked about procedures done at Planned Parenthood. If any controversy is directed at the organization, it is almost always about this topic. There are two types of abortion in the United States: the in-clinic abortion and the abortion pill. Planned Parenthood provides both to their clients. “The abortion pill is a combination of two medicines to end a pregnancy: mifepristone and misoprostol,” (Planned Parenthood). Patients can either take the drugs at home, or in the clinic where it is first provided. This type of procedure is more effective in the early stages of pregnancy. After the early stages of pregnancy have passed, doctors would then recommend the in-clinic abortion in exchange. Even though it is more invasive, it has a very high effective rating. The doctors employed at Planned Parenthood practice a technique that suctions the fetus out of a woman’s uterus. “From October 1, 2012 to September 30, 2013, Planned Parenthood performed 327,653 abortions,” (Arter). While the organization works with terminating the pregnancy, they also provide ways to prevent pregnancy. The most common form of birth control is the pill. On average, the pill costs around 30 to 50 dollars a month. At Planned Parenthood, they lower the cost to anywhere from 0 to 50 dollars.     Planned Parenthood itself isn’t necessarily the problem, but the people that oppose it. Christian Policy Analysist, Sarah Torre, has many things to say on the issue of Planned Parenthood, although she doesn’t necessarily try to see it from a side other than hers. While reflecting upon rumors about Planned Parenthood selling tissue and body parts of unborn babies, Torre presents that government funding needs to be cut entirely from the organization. She supports her argument by making claims such as Planned Parenthood has enough money, and that there are enough other places for women to get the care and services provided there. Being the leading abortion provider in the US is the authors top reason, however, for prompting her “defund Planned Parenthood” campaign, even though abortions only make up about 3% of all services provided. She claims it is immoral for taxpayers, especially those who are against abortion, to be required to pay for an affiliation that provides the very thing they are so much against. The fact seems to be forgotten that although not everybody believes that healthcare, such as programs provided by the Affordable Care Act, are not approved or liked by everyone.
