Imagine a world without cars. The world would be rather harsh and difficult without them. However, there is controversy surrounding the true inventor of the automobile. Some people believe that the real inventor was Henry Ford, and others believe it was Richard Dudgeon, but the actual inventor of the automobile was Karl Benz. Although most people believe that Henry Ford invented the automobile, he did not. In fact, he was not even the first person to build a car. As stated in the passage “Henry Ford,” “In 1908, Ford invented the Model T, specifically designed to appeal to the masses.” However, in “History of Karl Benz,” it states, “In 1887… Benz created the first definitive commercial vehicle, the Model 3.” These quotes blatantly contradict the notion that Henry Ford built the first car or vehicle, and therefore Henry Ford was not the inventor of the automobile. …show more content…
However, his invention does not count as a modern automobile. According to “A Brief History of the Automobile,” “[Dudgeon’s] automobile was powered by a steam engine.” Furthermore, the passage also directly states, “It was not like the cars we think of today, of course.” The article literally states that Dudgeon’s invention is not up to the standards of a modern automobile. An automobile is classified by many as a vehicle, with a gas engine, that can propel itself and be directed by a person. Dudgeon’s invention ran off steam, and is therefore not an
