No Child Left Behind
The No Child Left Behind law is a law promoted by George W. Bush, in which public high schools are required to provide information on all of their students to the Pentagon. By doing this, it ensures that no matter how hard they try to hide, the future draft will leave no child behind. The No Child Left Behind law is a detriment to American public schools. Although the No Child Left Behind act was meant to aid the children of America in elementary and secondary education, it is actually hindering them. Children that have learning disabilities are forced to take these standardized tests. One of the key features of the No Child Left Behind Act was to ensure that all students must show proficiency in math and reading by the 2013-2014 academic year; hence, school districts must therefore show a yearly progress report towards this goal. This applies to students with English as a second language and those with learning disabilities. “Even more important, accountability policies such as those included in NCLB [No Child Left Behind] have ensured that each state tests its students uniformly, regardless of school location, student demographics, or student disabilities.”(Lagana-Riordan and Aguilar). This is unfair to a child that has dyslexia to have to compete with a child without dyslexia. This causes the dyslexic students to have to struggle just to be equal with them. The No Child Left behind Act has suffered from a great deal of problems that have actually limited its effectiveness. The children that live in poverty get the finances they need to get the proper education. “Although NCLB acknowledges and seeks to close the achievement gap, it does not address the systemic barriers that children face when they live in poverty or oppression.” (Lagana-Riordan and Aguilar). This explains the reason that minorities have a higher drop out rate than whites because of monetary issues. School districts that continuously fail to post higher test scores will face sanctions. Principals and teachers in such underperforming schools could be suspended, removed, or replaced.The No Child Left Behind Act forces all schools to provide top-quality education to students who are often underserved in the public education system, including children with disabilities, from low-income families and non-English speakers, as well as for all ethnicities. For the first time in U.S. history, educational progress is tracked separately and required to be shown for each ethnic group in each school, rather than one average for an entire school. Previously in an attempt to prove progress, schools could focus on increasing test scores or related data for a small, bright group of students in order to bring up the average, rather than ensuring that all students are given an equal opportunity at a world-class education. This new law was supposed to close the student achievement gap and set higher standard of excellence for every child. Supporting the child with love and care from both peers and adults usually helps the child succeed more in school. But instead the dropout rates have increased tremendously because now the American children are stressed with a an over rated state standardized test with no one really on their side to help them just there to get them ready just to barely pass the test. “Conversely, feelings of alienation and disengagement in middle and high school students leave them at risk...
