1. How has the advancement in technology helped data gathering? Advancement of technology greatly affects the generation, collection and analysis of data. Data is vital for organizations and business managers to make more sound decisions and apply better strategies towards business objectives (Sekeran, 2003). Now with the dizzying pace of advancements in technology, it is becoming more and more important to use cutting edge technology in research. Traditional methods of data gathering methods including interviews, surveys, focus groups, experiments etc. were highly dependent on human interaction and effort. Advancement of technology made it easier to reach a wider audience than surveyors or interviewers could possibly achieve. Online web based surveys can gather data much faster than traditional surveys and are applicable to a much wider audience. They are cheaper and the gathered data can be prepared for analysis much easily since the data is already in digital form (Sen & Bricka, 2009). Video Conferencing applications like Skype made it possible to arrange focus groups, conduct interviews and surveys which require human interaction from a distance of thousands of kilometers. These methods helped organizations to reduce costs while conducting data gathering methods like surveys, interviews and focus groups whilst making the process much streamlined and efficient (Bertrand & Bourdeau, 2010). The Internet also made it possible to access the data currently available much faster than reviewing the literature on the subject. More and more organizations like Hans Rosling’s Gapminder are working to make various types of data available online for anybody which will create an online pool of crucial data that can be accessed from anywhere in the world by typing some keywords on a search engine. This process would have been painstaking and incredibly expensive without the help of technology (Gapminder 2014). The upheaval of mobile devices combined with social media irrevocably changed the data collection process. Vital marketing data that was gathered with extensive focus groups and interviews can now be collected with the help of special data analysis software through social media. The sharing culture created an invaluable opportunity for anyone who needs data. People tend to share their experiences with photos, videos, tweets, status updates and this whole creates a new form of meaningful data for organizations businesses and scientists. For instance, ratings data for TV shows are gathered by installing devices to few selected homes throughout the country and analyzing the data from those devices. Now with the emergence of social media, media research companies can determine how much a TV show is being watched by monitoring the discussions and activity among social media users with special software. Companies can similarly measure the reaction to their products, marketing strategies and campaigns by monitoring social media activity rather than conducting cumbersome surveys, interviews and focus groups. This also creates a much more intimate setting for data collection where you do not ask for a special opinion from a customer but naturally gather it by the reactions of people using your products or exposed to your marketing materials. These devices are also capable with geo-tagging thanks to GPS services which means the researchers can also obtain location data for their research where applicable. In the future emerging technologies like speech recognition and dictation software can replace the need for analyzing recorded audio and video or written texts by humans. This is also a good example of how technology constantly changes the way data is created, collected and analyzed. The way we currently use technology for data collection methods may become obsolete and new technologies will emerge to improve data collection further. 2.
